Williams can win with his own recruits

DETROIT - Even after seven Final Four trips and an NCAA title in 2005, nitpickers can still find one omission on North Carolina coach Roy Williams' resume.

The 2005 title was accomplished in Williams' second season at North Carolina, with Final Four most outstanding player Sean May and most of the key players recruited by predecessor Matt Doherty.

Williams was asked if there would be a difference winning the championship with his own recruits Monday - if the Tar Heels can defeat Michigan State.

"None whatsoever," Williams said Sunday. "Absolutely none. When Sean May stands up here four years ago and says his dream would be to be the first person to hug Coach Williams if we won a national championship, it doesn't get any better than that."

"And that was my team."

Indeed, to somehow withhold credit from Williams for winning with a program he'd been coaching for two full seasons would be ridiculous. There isn't an asterisk on the banner hanging from the rafters in the Smith Center or in the NCAA record book.

Williams has a chance to become the 13th coach with two NCAA championships Monday, and he will deserve the accolades that come with it if he can get it done. - Ken Tysiac

What stands out more is that Matt Doherty didn't get any credit for that championship. Yeah, I like Roy, especially now that he is actually using his timeouts instead of saving them for next year, but Matt got a bad rap when the administration didn't back him when he was trying to make the program his own. Still a black mark on Carolina history.

Matt was a complete idiot that tried to change EVERYTHING about the baskelball program. He should have only worried about the team and not the administration. He might as well change colors like Jason Capel.

'24 wasn't a National Championship, bud.

State pulls off the upset, 83-80. Izzo downs 3 #1 seeds in a row!!

Ken, I wouldn't publish an article saying "Williams can win with his own recruits" until Williams wins with his own recruits.

you guys forget that these recruits still need teaching and coaching before they can win as a team. You think they just walk on the floor and win? It would have never happened without Roy and would not have happened with Matt D. This was Roy's team coached all year and taken to the title, not Matt's team....Haters with just another thing that they try to smear UNC with...Give it up haters, we are #1 and the 2009 National Champions....
