UNC's Barnes, Henson, Marshall turning pro

CHAPEL HILL — Harrison Barnes, John Henson and Kendall Marshall are leaving North Carolina and will enter the NBA draft, the school announced in a statement on Thursday.

Barnes, a forward, and Marshall, a point guard, are sophomores who are both foregoing their final two years of eligibility. Henson is leaving the Tar Heels after his junior season.

In addition to senior Tyler Zeller, Barnes, Henson and Marshall were most responsible for the Tar Heels’ success during the 2011-12 season. UNC fell short of its goal of winning a national championship, but the Tar Heels finished 32-6, won the ACC regular season championship and reached the NCAA tournament Midwest regional finals.

“It’s a great day for three youngsters who are taking another step toward their ultimate goal of playing professional basketball,” UNC coach Roy Williams said in a statement. “On a very small stage, it’s a sad day for me because I won’t get to coach them again. All Tar Heel fans will miss them greatly, as well.”

The announcement comes four days after the Tar Heels ended their season with an 80-67 loss against Kansas in the Midwest regional final in St. Louis. UNC lost while Marshall sat on the bench, sidelined by the broken right wrist he suffered in a victory against Creighton in the third round of the NCAA tournament.

NIT Runner-up 2013?

Good for them! I just hope they don't get drafted by Charlotte for their sake. I could see Barnes being a Boobcat. Not good for him. We know Anthony Davis isn't coming here, because the Boobcats aren't getting the 1st pick. The lottery won't work in their favor. I would not want to build a team around Barnes. He'll be a bust.

Dook will be NIT bound, not UNC. They only have 1 recruit coming in...shooting guard. No PG's on the team that are any good. At least UNC has the best PG coming in. Rated higher than Marshall was.
Marcus Paige will be ANOTHER Cousey winner like Felton, Lawson, and Marshall...

Really? 27-win Dook brings 4 starters back and is going to the NIT?

Dook hasn't gone to the NIT since 1981. Do you want to bet money on that? Do you use Paypal, dude?

That crashing sound you hear is 10 million Walmarters jumping off the Tar Heel bandwagon...rough times ahead!

Got to admit it makes this makes me happy after hearing dozens of arrogant Hole fans all year saying "2012 NATIONAL CHAMPS. BOOK IT."

Duke has 4 starters coming back? Did Austin Rivers or Mason Plumlee reverse their decisions to leave early or was that misinformation?

Those guys did the right thing. Barnes and Marshall should have gone last year.

I think we all agree Barnes was a huge disappointment that went 2-3 vs. Dook with 0 Final Fours.

So WHY is UNC putting his jersey in the rafters? Do they have any pride at all?

Disappointing year for a team that was supposed to win it all or at least be able to compete with Kentucky. I only saw glimpses of greatness with this team. They lacked consistency throughout the season and never really developed as a true powerhouse. Yes, they had some great games, but I'm sorry, they were not a dominant team and they lacked fire and desire. Barnes especially lacked fire. He was downright bad in many games that I watched. The team did not play defense and could not shoot the 3 ball. And without Marshall running the show, they couldn't even create their own shot .... exception Zeller. Barnes was the most inconsistent player on the team. Overall, a major disappointment from a team with 5 NBA lottery picks.

yeah I really agree with the comment by one of the anonymous, good for them, they deserved that since they worked so hard throughout the season
