Kendall Marshall passes Ed Cota for UNC record

There have been games this season, several of them, in fact, when Kendall Marshall has accumulated four assists rather quickly. He needed just four on Wednesday night to set a new single-season record for assists at North Carolina, but Marshall, the sophomore point guard, had to wait.

He went into halftime with three assists, and then set up Harrison Barnes on a jump shot a couple of minutes into the second half. When the shot went through, Marshall had his 285th assist of the season, which set a school record. Ed Cota set the previous record with 284 assists during the 1999-00 season.

“It was definitely weighing on me in the first half,” Marshall said. “I think we had three pitch aheads that usually are easy baskets. And we didn’t convert on it, or a couple of them were bad passes on my part. Some of them – I don’t know what happened.”

He smiled at that. Some games, Marshall has piled up assists with so little effort it’s easy to lose count. During the Tar Heels’ 88-64 victory against Maryland, though, Marshall seemed to be stuck on three assists for the longest time.

“It felt good to just do that early in the second half,” Marshall said of setting record.

At the next television timeout after Marshall set the record, the public address announcer at the Smith Center made those in attendance aware that they’d just witnessed a bit of UNC basketball history. Marshall received a long ovation.

He finished the game with eight assists, which gives him 289 and counting. He’s tied with Bobby Hurley for the third-most assists in a single season in ACC history, and he needs 15 to set a new conference record. Barring something unforeseen, it’s a certainty that Marshall, then, will be making more history.

As for the record he just set, and the player he surpassed, Marshall said he does have a relationship with Cota. The two haven’t spoken in a while, Marshall said, but they spent some time with one another about a year ago, at the end of Marshall’s freshman season.

“He’s a very good guy,” Marshall said. “I watch his highlights all the time. And you all talk about me, but some of the passes that he had the courage to make are ridiculous.

“So I have the utmost respect for his game and I thought he was a very great player.”

Best point guard in the country! UNC 76 DOOK 69

And he won't make first team ACC.

UNC-CHeats will go down (again) on Saturday. CHEATERS NEVER WIN! LOL!

Maybe not since Zeller, Barnes, and Henson will be on there with Mike Scott and Stoglin, but at least he'll have an ACC and NCAA Championship ring.

No Dook players will make the 1st Team...3 UNC players will and it should be 4.

Dook 20 UNC 9 this century...keep living in the '40s loser!!

Haha neither of these teams are winning it all, you are delusional if you think they are. A young, upstart team called Kentucky is 29-1 and getting better and better.

P.S. UK doesn't ever lose at home(ahem.. UNC, Duke)or by 33 points on the road (lol!).

UK won't win it all, and they will choke as they have young talent that will choke when it counts. Remember Brandon Knight and John Wall...they had better teams and could not close the deal. Same thing wil happen this year. Lol...UNC will win end the end, and you thank FSU for that!

If UK did win it all...the NCAA will investigate Coach Cal like they did when he was a UMASS and Memphis...he is dirty! When was the last time UK was even in the Final Four? They will flop like they always do in the tourney...

If "cheaters never win" then how do you explain the many and varied championships?

John W. said...

...and Carolina has one eight of the last fifteen. See how easy it is to arbitrarily bracket some games to make a point?

Good idea, though -- throwing out the history that defines the rivalry...

3:35PM: "When was the last time UK was even in the Final Four?"

UMM...last year?? Beat Carolina haha, anything else?

Marshall drops 20 on the Dookies and breaks the record while Zeller and Henson have their way with the Plumgirls.

3:35-You should really educate yourself before you speak. Obviously don't watch too much bball after that statement as any Carolina fan should know that fact.

Another year, another 2 Dook wins over the baby blue softies...

Looks to become a habit, a la the '99-'04 years (14 Dook wins, 2 UNC wins).

After watching Duke let Wake almost come back, and UNC playing around with Maryland last night. Duke will lose on Saturday by 10. Live by the "3", and die by the "3." I can assure you that they will will make their fair share, but will come short in the end. Plumlees are a joke times 3!

Who is the OVERALL better basketball program? Look at the stats...UNC PERIOD

Given the way Dook has played at home this year they are ripe for a loss to the Heels. Zeller and Henson are peaking at the right time and will absolutely own the Dook frontcourt. It'll be close but the good guys in Carolina Blue will win and snatch up a 1 seed going into the tourney. Go Heels!

well in my opinion it was not a surprise that a player like Kendall Marshall passed Ed Cota for UNC record, I actually expected it!
