How will Hansbrough score record point?

Dunk? Free throw? Three-pointer? There's little doubt Tyler Hansbrough will break Phil Ford's career scoring record at North Carolina, but teammates differ on how they'd like to see it happen.

CHAPEL HILL — There's little doubt that North Carolina big man Tyler Hansbrough will set the school record for career points Thursday night. After all, he needs only nine to pass Phil Ford, currently atop the list at 2,290, and the senior has only posted six single- digit games in his career.

But how will he do it?

Shooting guard Wayne Ellington figures it will occur on a lay-up. Forward Danny Green predicts a three-point play.

Reserve Bobby Frasor, meanwhile, thinks it will happen at the foul line; the big man is, after all, already the school leader in free throw attempts.

Wing Marcus Ginyard will be hoping for something a bit more exciting.

"I'd love him to hit a three to do it,'' Ginyard said. "Hopefully, he'll do it that way -- or a dunk or something like that. I just hope he doesn't do it on the free throw line. Maybe a half-court shot at halftime or something? That would be nice."

No matter how it occurs, expect a standing ovation from the crowd, which will include Ford, who is now an assistant coach for the Charlotte Bobcats. And don't expect much of a reaction from Hansbrough, who has downplayed the individual record in favor of a team-first philosophy.

"He'll get some more text messages, or some more phone calls,'' Frasor said of any possible celebration. "But for the most part, he'll make himself a protein shake and go to sleep."

How do you think Hansbrough will set the record? Share your thoughts below.

The same way he scores half his points. I'm sure he'll just plow into someone out of control, flail his arms, throw up some crap, get the blocking foul (when it should be a charge), and goto the free throw line where he will convert. Through all of this, he will never blink, never, b/c he cannot.

In before Carolina is too scared to play UNCC

Anonymous said...

Wow! I would love to be there in person. Are tickets still available?

Too scared to play UNCC? I'm sorry, but I don't think that we're afraid of a 4-6 team, especially after what we've already done to two teams that were ranked in the top 13. An almost win against Clemson was impressive - to whatever degree a loss can be - but I don't think that UNC has anything to fear from the Niners

And yes, tickets are available at www.tarheelblue.com

tarheelblue.com ??

No - I wasnt looking for tickets to the game. I was hoping to get tickets to watch his next bowl movement.

Get ol' Roy to put the 9ers on the schedule, then. Hans-urkel will get his record at the line after an opponent verbally fouls him about his Urkel-esque shorts pulled up to his sternum.

What's the point of putting UNCC on the schedule? Wins against UNCG (1-6), Southern Illinois (3-5), and a decent win over Mississippi State (7-3) makes Miss St. the only team with a winning record you've been able to beat. At least 4 of our teams have come against teams with winning records, not to mention two ranked opponents. Charlotte would fit quite well with the scrub teams we play during Christmas break, but why bother when we can use those games to travel to places like Chicago.

I was going to break into the UNC-CH locker room and steal Hansbrough's jock strip but the Above the Rim bloggers were too busy sniffing it. =/

Who cares? Honestly nobody will remember what shot he beat a 30 year old record with. Is the observer that desperate for a story that this is a real blog? How about the story how Hansbrough will be a first round bust and out the league in less than 5 years?

My comments on this subject have nothing to do with envy of Duke, UNC-CH, NCSU, WFU, UNCC or ANY OTHER basketball program in America.

The point here is very simple......

WHO CARES HOW THE RECORD POINT IS SCORED?

Is UNC-CH one of the top programs in the country? It would be silly to say otherwise.

But the point remains, even if you are a TarHeel fan.............remembering how the point was scored or even thinking about how the point MIGHT BE SCORED is just plain stupid.

I live in Charlotte and I respect the TarHeel program, but NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND SHOULD GIVE A DARN HOW "THE RECORD POINT" IS SCORED.

With this kind of BS, it is no wonder that McClatchy Newspapers are in financial trouble.

Exactly right! This is trash "journalism", which maybe we could shorten to "jism". Who wrote that crap, Sarah Aaaaarthun?

UNC-CH hoops are for two types of fans:

1.ignorant-walmart shopping-cousin kissin-Gastonia residents-whose homes' have axles. Never set foot in Chapel Hell.

2. Buffy and Gavin from Myers Park sipping their $100 bottle of wine wearing Rams club lapel pins on their sportjacket.

I think it is funny that some Niner fans put there names up here, but none of the tar heel lovers do. Must be b/c they can't spell "Hansborough" to put in their name, "Chapel Hill", or wait a minute... They're name would probably more accurately end up being "CPCC-TarheelFan4Life."

Sorry, I don't have penis envy of the ACC, I really don't mind it at all, and watch it a bunch, but to think this story is even worth the URL it is located at is a joke. Especially, since I totally spoiled for everyone how he is going to get his scoring record.

Phil Ford will drink himself silly tonight

Here's how it will happen. Roy will pull the other 4 UNC players off the court, so Psycho T can take on all 5 from Evansville. The mighty Hansborough will inbound the ball to himself, dribble down court, 'will' his way through the 5 defenders, leaving them on the ground (even though they all had position first) and score the basket to tie the record. Of course he will take his oh so familiar spot on the FT line and break the record with a FT.

Does anyone know HandsOffMeBro's shoe size? I found his left shoe on ebay and I want to make sure it's legit. I'm sure Mr. Robbi Pickeral will know.

Jeez! All the haters out there who just have to take a shot at a kid who has exemplified what a college athlete should be are pathetic.

The kid has done everything is his power to improve his admitedly sub-par skill set year after year and done all that has been asked of him by his coach and team and all these idjits can do is wank about him and try to put him down. It's sad really. T.H. is the kid we all should be pulling for primarily because he is the "everyman" in todays high profile star athlete world of college sports. I for one applaud him for staying in school and enjoying being a college kid while striving for team goals over and above individual accolades. Not since the days of Tim Duncan have we been allowed to enjoy a "star" for an entire 4 year career and I think it's great that Hans has taken this route.

I fell in love with college basketball watching Phil Ford run the four-corners and now my son has caught the fever having watched Tyler chase his dream. Somehow I hope that I can get to the Dean Dome and have my son experience this historic moment along with all the other Tar Heel fans that have pulled for Tyler since he set foot on campus and helped keep the premier college program at the top of the heap when all the experts were predicting a spectacular fall from the NCAA championship pinnacle!

As for All you Haters: I would ask that you stop thinking that we Carolina grads/fans think that we're better than everyone else because we don't, rather, be content in knowing that we are comfortable in allowing you to look up to us as beacons of what you could have been had you been smart enough to gain entry into the hallowed halls that comprise THE University of North Carolina.

why the jealousy niner fan? if TH was on your team you would love him. your rant makes you look like a dookie. If TH went to the line everytime he got fouled the game would last 5 hours.

Maybe he will get his face broken right before he is going to get the record. Now that would be funny.

Funny that there are only two types of Carolina fans. Apparently only Charlotte & Gastonia support the Tar Heels, and those in Gastonia haven't been to the Hill? That seems to mean that typical middle class citizens can't get into one of the highest rated "education for your dollar" schools in the nation. It also eliminates the 19% of undergraduates that are from out of state, as well as the heavy presence from Wake & Orange counties, Eastern North Carolina, and the Mountains. Apparently the particular Niner fan doesn't realize that there are other parts of the country (and state), as no one else wants to particularly travel far to come to UNCC.

Seeing as there are fans at every venue the team plays in (Maui, Detroit, etc.) it is obvious that UNC Hoops appeals to a much broader fan base than you seem to comprehend.

UNC Class of 2011 (slight paradox to the two types of fans idea).
