Appalachian State coach states NCAA case

Appalachian State’s NCAA hopes took a hit with the Mountaineers’ overtime loss Friday to College of Charleston, but coach Houston Fancher stated his case after the game.
“We were the class of this league. The class of this league resides on the mountaintop,” Fancher said of his team, which went 16-4 against conference opponents. “We had the highest RPI in the league, and we were the only team to beat every team in this league.”
Expect Davidson coach Bob McKillop to use those statements as motivation today. The Wildcats are 19-1 against Southern Conference teams, and they have won 12 straight by an average of 18 points.
Other notes heading into tonight’s championship:
-- College of Charleston guard Dontaye Draper sizzled Friday night, scoring 38 points and making eight 3-pointers. He hasn’t played well against Davidson – shooting 33 percent over two games – but said he isn’t thinking about that now.
“This is a new season,” he said. “I don’t remember those games.”
-- Davidson guard Stephen Curry is getting on the national radar, but his name is definitely not a household one yet. An ESPN announcer referred to him as “Steven” throughout highlights of Curry’s 30-point performance against Furman.
The network will get another chance Saturday to learn that Curry’s first name is pronounced “Steff-in.” ESPN2 will televise the championship game, and Curry is averaging 21 points against the Cougars.
-- College of Charleston won Friday because the Cougars finally made their free throws. Charleston missed 11 of its first 18 free throws, but made 11 of its final 12.

The class of the league just eliminated its semifinal opponent by 30 points.

Another decent team in the league just got let down by its star guard.

Try next year coach.

Davidson will go to the NCAA's and of course lose and go home.Another sacrificial lamb for the real teams in the tourney.

Said with all thecourage an anonymous coward could muster.

Nobody wants to play us in the first round. Nobody.

I seem to remember a star guard letting his team down when ASU played Davidson.

Yeah, I hear there are 64 other teams quaking in their shoes at the prospect of playing Davidson in the first round. Again, who have they beaten out of conference this year? (Besides the mighty Central Connecticut State Blue Devils of the NEC).

"I seem to remember a star guard letting his team down when ASU played Davidson."

I seem to remember App State's entire team letting itself down against Elon, UNC-G and Furman during the season.

Davidson:
20-1 in SoCon play
Regular Season Champs
Tournament Champs

Enough said.

Now, with the barbs out of the way, I do hope App State still manages to get an NCAA Tournament at-large bid. I'd pull hard for App in the NCAAs, and will do so as well in the NIT should they end up there.

Here's the deal,

App State lost to three inferior teams this year.

Davidson only lost to one.

Coming from a Georgia Southern fan, the SC finally has a team that plays a decent schedule and beats some of the big boys, and has a shot to win a game in the NCAAs, but the chips fall the right way for the Mildcats and they get the autobid. I'd say the chance for the Southern to win a game in the tourney is now zero. We'll see how that "juggernaut" of a non-conference schedule prepares Davidson. I hope they win a game, but I've got my doubts.

Those "Mildcats" sure whipped your GSU Eagles.

So you only lost one Southern Conference game, How many tournament bound teams did Davidson beat, Appalachian beat at least two. Oh yeah, App played a few bad games, if they are inferior, how did Davidson lose?
At least App might win the NIT. Davidson won't win a game.
