Lowe uncertain of future with Wolfpack

GREENSBORO – With speculation swirling that he is about to coach in his last ACC tournament, N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe said this afternoon that he doesn’t know whether he will be back for a sixth season.

“That’s not in my hands,” Lowe told a three-deep throng of reporters after practice today at the Greensboro Coliseum. “That’s in other people’s hands. We’re going to see what we do here. Right now the focus is to come into this tournament and try to win.”

Lowe is 86-77 at N.C. State without a trip to the NCAA tournament. The Wolfpack (15-15) is the No. 10 seed for the ACC tournament and will face No. 7 seed Maryland at 7 p.m. Thursday in an opening round game.

The coach has reminded his team of his success in past tournaments. In 1983, Lowe was the point guard on an N.C. State team that won the ACC tournament as a No. 7 seed and went on to capture the NCAA title.

In Lowe’s first season as the Wolfpack’s coach in 2007, N.C. State won three games to reach the ACC final as a No. 10 seed before falling to North Carolina.

“It’s not often that you get a chance to win four games and win a championship,” Lowe said. “And that’s something we have in front of us right now. It’s a great opportunity for our team to write another chapter and to show that we learned and have gotten better and are growing.”

Lowe said miracles can happen in the ACC tournament, and said he has put thoughts of his job security out of his mind. He was asked point blank if he expects to be back.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I don’t expect not to be. If I did, then I would be thinking negative. I’d rather think about this future and the program and the team and the players we have signed already. We have a very good recruiting class this year. We’ve got a nice class coming in next year. Still waiting to see if one other guy is going to commit, and if he is, it’s a very good class. I’m still preparing for the future.”

While our record is obviously not great under Lowe, I really do admire his love for the university and his dedication to the players. It's so sad that it hasn't translated well on the court. Best to the Pack in the ACC Tourney!

I love it. "Back in 1984." Hey guess what, Sid? These kids weren't even a thought to the world in 1983. You haven't produced so it's time to go or continue the tradition of state sucking at about every sport in the NCAA's.

Here's a comment, point blank....

Hey Sendek poster - look at Herbie stats this year - 4-14 in conference play and 12-18 overall.

Scoring offense ranked 294th
Rebounding 300th
Assist 57th
FG % 238th

You cannot shine a turd HOLE fan.

Hi Herb Sendek. Thanks for stopping by. Sorry to hear your team at Arizona State went 12-18 this year, and your season is already over. Hopefully you can find a new job that pays you another 80% raise over the previous school, and then convince the media you were forced out by the ASU fans.

you know what Tar "hole" fans can shine?

all our trophies.

stick to bass fishing. Maybe the fishing coach can take over the basketball team?

Ah yes. The "King Crack" from UNC - MOOU, bass fishing and rifle teams.

Aren't you guys suppose to be of higher intelligence, most creative, etc....

Must be too busy celebrating that infamous "HELMS CHAMPIONSHIP" that you created and applied to your National Championship claims.

Grab a mirror and go @#*( yourself.

I agree with the 3:59PM person's comments.

And for the Tar Heels fans, I wonder how good you're going to be next year when Zeller, Henson and Barnes are all playing in the NBA.

#7 seed in 1983? I don't think so. The Wolfpack finished the season tied for third in the ACC.

@5:57...

even without the Helms trophy its UNC 5, State 2.

so, what's your point?

Sidney Lowe is a class act. NCSU should feel lucky to have him.

You know what NC State and UNC fans have in common? Neither went to UNC!

NC State still has a basketball team???

Gotta love the class of a coach such as Sidney Lowe. Does it the right way, and puts the kids first.

Kind of like John Blake.. oh, wait.. we were talking about CLASS.

Best wishes Sid

NCSU was the #4 seed in 1983, not #7. Played Wake in the 4/5 matchup on Friday.

IF Sidney wins the ACC tourney, he will more than likely be retained. That is the only reason the announcement has not already been made. But to do that, Sidney has to win 4 consecutive ACC games. That is something he has never done as coach.

I've often wondered; where do people get the gall to demand that a coach be fired from his job? Just how much of a investment do any of us have in any college sports team that gives us that right? This is from a UNC 1 NC State 1A fan.

At least without the responsibilities of coaching, he could get back to doing such a fantastic job of raising his children.

The moron that thinks Herb was the best we could do obviously doesn't realize the half century of excellence that took place prior to 1990. No doubt we have sucked for the last 20 yrs, but a comparison of the three schools from 1946 to 1990 (Everett Case through Jim Valvano):

UNC: Two national titles, 11 conference championships; 952-316 (450-110 conference), 49-20 NCAA
Duke: No national titles, eight conference champions; 859-414 (368-235 conference), 35-11 NCAA
N.C. State: Two national titles, 16 conference championships; 890-376 (370-225 conference), 25-14 NCAA

C'mon Debbie Yow! Let's get a coach that can X and O, recruit and lead! I'm hearing there is an old friend at Arizona that will love to come back to the ACC! (not sendek, dipsh!ts)

I'm talking about Sean Miller!
