All-ACC: Duke's Smith unanimous

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) – Duke guard Nolan Smith is the only unanimous selection to the all-ACC basketball team.

The all-ACC teams were announced Monday following a vote of 75 members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Media Association.

Smith was joined by Duke teammate Kyle Singler, Maryland's Jordan Williams, Virginia Tech's Malcolm Delaney and Boston College's Reggie Jackson. Smith leads the ACC with an average of 21.6 points and is second in assists.

For the first time in league history, the outright ACC regular-season champion failed to place any players on the first team. North Carolina had three players make the second team and another on the third team.

What a joke

I hope you're happy media... More motivation for these guys. What a joke. Can't you guys get ANYTHING right?

KYLE SINGLER??? REALLY??? When was the last time the dude made a shot?

So the Heels are #7 in the country in a conference with only 2 ranked teams, and yet not one player is good enough to be first team All-Conference? That makes sense.

Kyle Singler is first team All-ACC? Did the media just vote on reputation or do these guys watch any conference games?

This is a stupid list. Reggie Jackson is better than all of those Heels? More valuable to his team? Really? Shouldn't your team do well for you to be valuable?

And what about Singler? If, say, Barnes isn't on 1st-team because he started slow, shouldn't Singler be dropped for doing mostly NOTHING over the second half of the season? Can't UNC fans just say Barnes was "in a slump" for those disappointing early games?

It's like retribution for the overpraise the Heels received at the beginning of the season. Two wrongs fighting to make a right, and landing at petty instead. Way to go, ACC media, you made a list so inaccurate as to strip the honor clean out of it. You must be proud.

Congrats Nolan and Kyle!

This is the height of stupidity.

Yahoo, Fox, CBS, etc choose Henson as defensive player of the year and he only makes 2nd ACC team... wow, the ACC must be soooo hard!!!!

Hope Kyle spent his extra year in college studying a foreign language.

what a bunch of whiners

I feel like the names of the folks who DIDN'T vote for Kendall Marshall on the Freshmen Team should be released and their voting rights should be stripped.

Wow. Kyle Singler? Really? Did the ACC voters not watch Harrison Barnes shut this dude down Saturday night?

When the Tar Heels are the last team standing in April the ACC voters are going to be laughed at all across the country.

Wow, is my first reaction. How can the conference champs not have anyone on the first team. Singler should not be on the first team this year.

And tomorrow Brad Brownell will get screwed out of the ACC COY award....just watch......

Hopefully Roy will use this as a tool to get the guys to remian focused in Greensboro this weekend. Singler has no business being 1st team and Marshall has no business being 3rd team.

This is shocking. I think another poster got it right - this is retribution for the media setting ridiculous expectations for Harrison Barnes. The Heels are being punished for the media's early errors in judgment. I am actually more put off by Kendall Marshall not being a unanimous pick on the Rookie team than I am about no Heels on the first team. I agree there is no difference between Barnes early struggles and Singlar's recent short-comings. I think even more should be expected from the senior to qualify for first team than the freshman. I hope the Heels use this as motivation, though as a fan, I find it insulting. As for COY, Roy Williams should be the unanimous choice in my book. He's lost four players permanently has one injured and has no first team all ACC players. Winning the regular season under those circumstances - not that I agree with the all ACC teams of course - make this a no brainer, not that I expect the guys who made these decisions to make the right one about COY.

man, the trailer parks are going to be furious

I don't get it at all. There is a little comfort knowing that the ACC Regular Season Champs 1st team is ALL Carolina players!

I'm a tar heels fan and it looks like they got it right to me. Though Marshall should be on the second team.

Singler in ACC conference games:

Under 40% from the field
Under 30% from 3pt
More turnovers than assists
6-31 in games vs. Carolina

Roy Williams would have to be coach of the year under this scenario. And perhaps he is. I was hating on his a-- in mid-season but it took the fans lighting a fire under his rear to get him to dump Drew in favor or Marshall. If Roy gets COY, he can also thank Drew because if Drew didn't quit, Roy would still be playing him 20 minutes and Carolina would have finished 4th or worse.

This just proves that when the team is more important than individual accomplishments, the team is a winner regardless of the record. In this case, the best team had the best record and a bunch of pretty good players.

And, how in the heck did Kyle Singler make first team?

Steve Gilmore said...

From a Tarheel fan......Nolan deserved the recognition. He plays hard every game and is a gentleman athlete. To see Singlar there is a joke. He is the most overrated played in the ACC. For you people that are always saying bad things about the Heels, I believe they finished 14-2 to cature the title. Funny what a decent point guard can do to a team. Good luck in the NCAA's to all ACC teams. Looks like we will have 6 in there. I always pull for the ACC and they do have the last two national championship teams. Play hard guys.

I know steven he's overrated, he's only the reigning final 4 MVP.
What the hell have any of these TarHeels done besides winning a home conference game Saturday night... before their rookie fans who attended the NIT last year in Carmichael stormed the court.

Larry Drew Sr. should be coach of the year. He saw what the Heels needed (or didn't need) and made it happen...

HAHAHA.Listen to the tarholes cry,Wah,Wah.Who have they played? A cupcake non-conference schedule, played maryland only once and that was at home, played fla st without their best player, and basically strung together a good winning streak against nobody's except duke. All the tarhole fans thought this last win over duke would open the floodgates for the hapless holes, but they forget it only made them 1-1 in the series.Tarhole fans...gotta feel sorry for them, but bless their hearts lol.

For the Anonymous poster of March 7, 2011 11:10 PM: Yes, Singler was the 2010 Final Four MOP, and that was great. However, that accomplishment does not justify making him a 1st team All-ACC selection this year. And, though I personally don't consider him to be overrated, if you think objectively with your mind rather than subjectively with your heart, you have to admit Kyle's overall performance during the latter half of this season has been less than deserving of a 1st team selection - especially when there are others whose total body of work has been solid from the beginning to the end of the season. And you ask "What the hell have any of these TarHeels (Tar Heels is 2 words BTW) done besides winning a home conference game Saturday night"...the answer is they won the ACC regular season title. Lastly, I would hardly call Carolina fans "rookie", as they, like those of Duke, are among the most knowledgeable, seasoned and passionate fans around. Why so many have taken such exception with the students storming the court is beyond me. Given the excitement of the moment and the exuberance of youth, I consider their actions wholly justified and wish I could have been there to join them.

It's criminal that Tyler Zeller wasn't first team ACC, but none of the other Tar Heels deserved first team.

How can UNC end up being ranked #6? Did beating Duke justify them jumping up 6 spots over some very good teams? I guess Dean Smith's horseshoe has truly been passed on to Roy Williams.

I know this is a big what if BUT what if Kyrie Irving had been healthy for the whole season? Just like Drew leaving UNC changed rhings just imagine how things would have played out if Irving had been healthy and played every game. Think about it

Look: John Henson Def. ACC POY!

Storm the court Heels fans, storm the court!

Anonymous said...

Hahaha how quickly we forget. To all those bashing Tarheels fans for rushing the court, a couple years ago Dook hit a game-winning shot against a Virginia Tech team that was 4-12, FOUR AND TWELVE, in the ACC that year and they rushed the court. So why don't you think about what you say before you open your fat mouths. Dookie fans are such sore losers :)

At Buddy,
You're really going to talk about UNC getting preferential treatment in the media? Duke is almost always overrated in the standings. They get crushed by UNC and drop one spot?
