Poll: UNC favored over Duke by NC residents

North Carolinians who will be cheering for Duke on Wednesday night will be outnumbered nearly 2 to 1 by residents of the state cheering for North Carolina, according to Public Policy Polling's annual poll.

Thirty-seven percent of the people in the state will cheer for the Tar Heels, 22 percent will support Duke, and 41 percent are indifferent. The teams meet at 9 p.m. Wednesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The poll shows that Duke's popularity has not increased in North Carolina after winning the 2010 NCAA champion. The 2010 version of the poll found North Carolina favored by 35 percent to 21 percent.

North Carolina's support is especially strong among Democrats, who prefer the Tar Heels by 43 percent to 21 percent. Among Republicans, Duke trails only slightly, 31 percent to 26 percent.

Public opinion of Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is slightly higher in the state than a year ago. He is viewed favorably by 47 percent and negatively by 14 percent. A year ago, his rating was 44 percent favorable and 13 percent negative.

North Carolina coach Roy Williams is rated favorably by 38 percent and negatively by 10 percent, numbers nearly identical to those from last year.

Public Policy Polling surveyed 575 North Carolina voters from Jan. 20-23, and states the margin of error at plus- to minus-4.1 percent.

Captain Obvious.....Ive been a Duke fan since I was a kid. Everyone knows Carolina is the favorite school in NC. Thats not news. And would it be any coincidence that the 41% that are indifferent are not from here?

This is the dumbest article i have ever read.UNC is a state school and DUKE is private,so duh!! That's like saying there are more state fans than wake fans.Did you know that if you eat,you won't be hungry? Go a little further upstate and you'll find more duke fans. Most people cannot afford to go to duke, while unc is like going to unc-charlotte or unc-greensboro.What an ignorant poll.Try doing an article on the IQ's of duke vs unc fans!!

The one interesting bit in the article is that despite Carolina's huge advantage in fanbase is that of the same people polled, a higher percentage of them have a favorable view of Coach K over Roy.

Thats because most of the Duke fans are in New Jersey.

And people in this state have no reason to back a private school team unless they have a personal connection.

Dumbest, most obvious study ever. It's been Duke against the world for 30 years.

I just love how all the liberals love UNC, haha. Makes be dislike the Heel fans even more.

Would be the same lopsided fan results for any big state school vs. smaller private school. Think there are more UT fans or Vanderbilt fans in Tenn?
