Capel adds to Appalachian State staff

Former North Carolina player Jason Capel has added three assistant coaches with extensive basketball experience in the state to his staff at Appalachian State.

Rick Scruggs, who directed Gardner-Webb to a stunning win at Kentucky in 2007, brings 25 years of collegiate head coaching experience to the staff.

Justin Gainey, a former N.C. State point guard who served on the staffs at N.C. State and Elon and has served as head coach at Cary Academy, also is joining Capel.

So is Bobby Kummer, the Charlotte 49ers alumnus who has spent the past six seasons on Charlotte's staff under Bobby Lutz.

"It's a staff with a nice mix of experience as well as guys that are hungry to get out and recruit," Capel said in a statement.

Getting Rick Scruggs is a pretty good hire. That guy has some quality experience and will be able to guide Capel along the way. Nice job thus far. Surprised that he did not grab someone from the Carolina family, though.

Scruggs is an egomaniac and a bully who should have been fired from G-W a long time ago, probably when they ended up on probation after the President of the school lost his job, but Scruggs didn't. Scruggs treats people like garbage, including faculty and staff. He won't last in Boone, they won't tolerate his kind of crap for long.

Of note...it was who G-W just hired, Chris Holtmann, that played a bigger part in that win over UK than Scruggs.

Scruggs is not a good hire, I'm sorry. Yeah, he coached at GW for 15 years... and had a sub .-500 record. The Kentucky win was due to Holtmann, GW's new coach, and the players, mainly Thomas Saunders, Grayson Flittner and Aaron Linn.
