Williams' expletive surprises Tar Heels

CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina forward Tyler Hansbrough wasn't surprised to hear that coach Roy Williams dropped the F-bomb on Wednesday night — just that it happened during his post game press conference.

"Oh, man,'' the senior said, growing wide-eyed and a bit red-faced when told his coach had used the expletive he usually replaces with 'frickin,' 'friggin'' or 'flippin''

"I've definitely heard it more than you guys,'' Hansbrough said. "It's usually once every other ballgame, he drops it in the huddle, and we know he means business then. But I think he may beat himself up over that because he usually counts how many cuss words he says in the huddle and in practice.

"When he gets really mad in practice he says, 'Now, that's four cuss words, and I didn't plan on saying any today.'"

Williams was talking about his team's failure to execute the full-court press after it beat N.C. State when he said: "We stink."

Asked why they stink, Williams responded: "If I knew the answer to that do you think we'd still be [expletive] stinkin'?"

After nervous laughter in the room, Williams apologized for using the curse word.

"I can't believe I said that," Williams said. "I only say that on the golf course."

The press conference was being broadcast live on both the Tar Heel Radio Network and Wolfpack-Capitol Sports Network.

Told of his coach's word choice, senior forward Danny Green seemed as stunned as Hansbrough.

"I don't really want to comment on coach's comments,'' Green said. "But if he gets mad, if you get him mad enough, and he keeps trying to tell you something over and over, he'll say some funny words -- but it's usually not the F-bomb as much ... but flippin', frickin'."

Asked if he thought Williams should run after practice as punishment, Green said no: "I don't think that will happen. Next to his name it says 'head coach,' so he gets to do whatever he wants to do. So I don't think we'll be making him run; he's the guy that makes us run."

Williams is a piece of trash, just like anything else associated with that university.

If anything, you just demonstrated a complete lack of class and have assured all who read your comment that you are a piece of trash. I'm interested to know what complaints you have against Carolina. I doubt you went anywhere better.

Looks like Anonymous is another in the long line of people wishing they could be a Tar Heel too. You pack wanna be's will never lose the jealousy huh????

HAHAHAHAHAHAH - What an ABC hater. Probably a "K" fan.. "K" can't make it 2 minutes into a game without dropping an "F-bomb".

Oh... So by piece of trash you mean a US president, dozens of lauded literary figures, celebrated actors, championship-winning atheletes, not to mention thousands of professionals who owe their careers to their time in Chapel Hill, right? Oh yeah, I went to Carolina too. I guess I'm a piece of trash. At least I'm a happy piece of trash. Go Tar Heels!

I think it's funny that the most ardent college sports fans typically do not/did not/could not attend or graduate from the institution they cheer for. There's nothing wrong with it but it still funny to me.

These "Wal-Mart" fans have ruined sportstalk radio. Guess they like to hear themselves talk.

ANONYMOUS, YOU ARE A PUNK, GREAT UNIVERSITY AND GREAT COACH...GOT UPSET AT QUESTION AND LET THE F BOMB FLY...SAID WAS SORRY BUT TOO LATE FOR LIVE RADIO....

I went to NCState and I'm a huge fan, and of course I hate UNC, but Roy Williams is as far from trash as you can get.

I actually really like the guy, he's a great coach, and if he wants to drop the F bomb (like so many coaches do every night) then who cares? He seems to have a funny sense of humor.

And UNC is not a trash school, for the record, just as no ACC schools are (except for FSU...seriously)

Anonymous at 9:49 probably didn't even go to college. Or, will come back and say, that he/she got into Carolina but he/she couldn't afford it (nonsense, Carolina will pay your way somehow if you are admitted.)

Using an F-bomb doesn't make one trashy. Lying about one of America's great universities does, however. You are a sad and pathetic chump.

I may have to add Georgia Tech to that list with FSU...

I'm not a Carolina fan nor a wanna be one, but it's a fine school and overall I believe that Roy Williams is a decent person. He appologized immediately. He let one slipped. It happens. What I found funny was watching the crowd at the Dean Dome. It's like they are at a night at the theatre. I cannot think of another building with a team at that level that is that boring to watch.

WHO CARES.!!! i hope all the sensitive sports fans turn your television to mute when you watch the NFL,MLB,or NCAA football.

Have you ever read US News & World Report rankings? We're talking about institutions of higher learning or have you forgotten their PRIMARY purpose. It's not how good their sports programs are. GT is one of the best public universities in the country. Many ACC schools rank high in their respective categories. Since you had to settle for NCSU I can only assume you couldn't into GT.

That shows everybody exactly just how 'classy' he really is. Well done Mr. Williams. (Yes, note the sarcasm in my typing.)

PS. I hope the ACC fines the ever loving crap out of him, but they won't... because he's at UNC and NOT at NC State.

Why was this worth space in a newspaper?

Anonymous said...

If he were a NC State coach or player, no one would have been able to understand what he was saying in the first place.

You wuffies really need to get over your inferiority complex and accept that the reasons your teams suck have nothing to do with conspiracies by the refs or the ACC.

To the sanctimonious tarhole fans who constantly criticize coach K for his language, Flip You!

I like him more after this. And no- I'm not a huge tarheel fan t begin with.

Looks like we have an anonynous N.C. State fan. Ah, poor little fella.

Class act.

I read the News & World Report rankings as one other blogger noted. Carolina is ranked #5 in the list of BEST public universities and #1 for best value in public universities. The graduate schools such as law, dental, business are all ranked near the top in the country. Trashy, I think not.

If they wrote an article every time K dropped an F bomb, they would have to devote an entire section of the paper.I am not criticizing K. He is a great coach. Every coach has probably dropped the F bomb at one time or another with the exception of Coach Smith.

We all have slipped up with our vocabulary at least once in our lives, and the embarrassment factor is based on the audience and the context of what was said.

Just get over it and move on.

Coach Williams IS a class act. You show me a coach that doesn't use the F-bomb and I will call you a liar. His class was certainly demonstrated in his apology and sense of humor in acknowledging his making a mistake and uttering the word in a press conference. Our (the team's)lack of ability to press is obviously a major frustration for him, and the F-bomb was out before he could stop it. I praise him for the way he handled it!

Why are people surprised by the f-bomb during competitive play? If you have your panties in a bunch because of it, you have now idea about sports.

Every coach will drop expletives every now and again. It signifies that you mean business once you have no other way of expressing it. Is this concept so lost on people?
And why do people have to resort to calling out somebody’s "class" or lack-thereof because of one word? Do you know him personally, or are you going to rush to judgment and post this crap online to make it look like you know more than you do?

The internet – it’s SERIOUS business! Lmao

shouldn't he be fined like Jr was? I mean that's horrible.

no way - this is serious? I thought I was reading the Onion.
A college coach using profanity? I refuse to believe it! Bless his precious little heart - Vomit.

I went to Kansas during Roy's last years there and he is one of the biggest class acts in all of sports! If he wasn't then this wouldn't have even been a news story.

Who cares. GO TERPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am shocked SHOCKED to hear of this kind of language coming from someone at a university.

Next you'll be telling us that people are drinking beer in the frat houses.

KMAC,
I hate to point fingers, but when discussing trash, NOBODY is worse than Maryland. The Maryland fans make State and even Duke's fans and students look like choir boys. The classless profanity that is allowed is awful and shows a total lack of sportsmanship! I attended the State at Carolina game and like Coach Roy, I was greatly disappointed with the Carolina defense several times throughout the game.... and then someone would make a good defensive play. Defensive rating C+. Overall UNC performance B. There is still great room for improvement. If Coach Williams is going to get the very best play out of this team, he better get busy quickly. GO TARHEELS!

Wow. When I was a senior starter at North Meck HS on the football team playing in the 3rd round of the NCHSAA 4AA playoffs agains undefeated Davie County we lost at the buzzer and an opposing players parent and uncle crossed the field in the mad confusion hysteria and began taunting our Viks and coaches.
One of the greatest assist coach moves ever saw Kmacdawg our hero step up and ran off these punks supposedly telling them to get the F out of there to protect our team since our sorry worthless over paid principal and AD werent on the field and did not have any cops down there.
We were proud of our heroic coach until 3 months later we heard incredibly that these troublemakers had filed a complaint and it was then that this stupid sorry overpaid principal at North told our hero coach KMacdawg that he was being suspended for coaching for a whole year. Nobody could believe this but it was true.
The next week coach Knotts at Indy broke a fans nose slamming the gate on it and got a 10 day suspension only.
We will never forget this as long as we live and we hate this principal who makes 5 times what teacher coaches make and leaves school at 3pm while coaches are lucky to get out at 7pm and work weekends for 900 bucks take home per season. Incredible.

Just never allegedly say the F word in CMS or at North when the principal is not doing his job or he will make you his scapegoat. This is CMS though so go figure.

Will UNC suspend Williams for a year? Yea rite.

So just whom does Roy think he is fooling by saying frickin and such. Everyone knows what he is alluding to. He should drop the charade and speak English.

You people need to lighten up. Get a life. I try not to read the garbage on these post but sometimes it is pitiful. I'm glad that only a small , I mean very small percentage of you can actually get together on anything.

UNC is an over-rated, Media Darling.... and will not win it all.... No way... They are incapable of beating 5-6 REAL teams in a row... they can't even beat 5-6 ACC(Weak Conference) teams in a row....

Good School for the South... but everyone knows that all the BEST Colleges are in the Northeast.... where education is valued....

Anonymous said...

The "F-Bomb" isn't an uncommon word and who cares if he or anyone slips up and says it every now and then. Some people make such a huge deal out of things that are so minor. Sure, he shouldn't have said it in a public news conference, but nobody is perfect and we all slip up sometimes when we shouldn't. As stressful of a job as Roy has, as well as other NCAA coaches, stuff like that is going to happen from time to time. It's part of life.

Anonymous said...

Hey "Beast of The Big East" I guess they don't teach people how to count at those Northeast colleges that are the best.....UNC has now won 10 ACC games in a row, seems pretty good for someone that can't even win 5-6 in a row

(1) I'm curious how Tech made the trashy list with FSU and Maryland (and how WFU was left off the list!). If you have specific examples for Tech, I'd like to hear them.

(2) Comparing the Williams press conference slip to the barrage of f-bombs and insults that Coach K throws (or threw in the past) at referees is a lopsided comparison, at best. (Disclosure: graduated from Tech, but raised a Tar Heel.)

(3) As for the Big East, Beast, no doubt that the elite-among-the-elite schools are in the Northeast (Harvard, Yale, MIT), but none of them are in your conference. UVA, Dook, UNC, and Tech are all top-tier schools with competitive D-I athletic programs. But you do have the classiest bunch of head coaches in the NCAA, like Bob Huggins. You got me there...
