Davidson’s game Saturday against College of Charleston at Belk Arena will be the place to be in Mecklenburg County (except it’s sold out, so don’t try to go unless you’ve got a ticket).
- ESPN2 and Dick Vitale will be there.
- The Wildcats can tie the Southern Conference’s all-time consecutive league regular-season victories mark.
- The Cougars are coached by Bobby Cremins.
- And there will be a moment of silence for former Wildcats great Mike Maloy, who died earlier this week. Maloyhas been denied a spot in Davidson’s hall of fame because he didn’t graduate. But that rule can – and should – be changed. There’s precedent. Austin Peay recently had a similar rule, but changed it to allow former scoring star Fly Williams to be included in the Governors’ hall.

Seriously? Davidson should follow the lead of Austin Peay? Why should a student-athlete be rewarded for not performing in both places. Davidson prides itself on being a place where academics and athletics co-exist. I applaud Davidson for its policy and hope they can find a way to honor Maloy, but still have that rule in place. Duke, which has done well in both the academic and athletic area, requires graduation to have a jersey retired.
It isn't that hard to sell out a 3000 seat high school gym.
I think it would be a mistake for Davidson to "change the rules" and retire Maloy's jersey even though he didn't graduate. If Curry goes pro after this season, his jersey shouldn't be retired either. Davidson needs to stay unique even though they're trying to play in the big leagues. There's nothing wrong with emphasizing academics as well as athletics. Because of its size and academic requirements, it will always be limited in the types of athletes that would even be interested but I think the game is changing/the world is changing so that there will be plenty of players who can compete on the hardwood and in the classroom. Keep the graudation requirement Davidson!!
6000.
Davidson already has a player in the hall of fame who didn't graduate - why change the rules now?
Where was the observer when dicky v was coming to Charlotte?
