Curry likely to get the point next season

Davidson guard Stephen Curry has been on a scoring tear recently, averaging 29 points in his past seven games.

Coach Bob McKillop has preferred to talk about Curry’s all-around game, from his improved rebounding to his defense to his passing.

That last skill might be pivotal next season, because Curry probably will have to slide over to a new position: point guard.

Starter Jason Richards graduates, and the Wildcats don’t have anyone to fill the void. Freshman Brendan McKillop is more comfortable on a wing so far, and Curry is the only Wildcat who has filled in at the point this season.

Davidson hasn’t signed a point guard recruit this year, and isn’t expected to this spring. That means the Wildcats will have to turn to Curry to both run and create the team’s offense next season.

The sophomore guard is a good passer – he’s averaged four assists over his past three games – but he tends to force passes. Curry has 64 assists this season, but also has 63 turnovers. He’s come a long way – Curry had 13 turnovers in his first college game last season – but he’ll have to take another step forward to keep the Wildcats on top in the Southern Conference next season.

Here's an idea. Write about a team other than Davidson for a change. The only time anything is written on this blog is to mention Davidson in some fashion. There are plenty of college basketball teams in NC and if you're gonna right about the SoCon there are other teams having good years. Appalachian is seeking its second-straight division title and has won nine out of its last ten games. But no that's not newsworthy. Kellen Brand suffered a concussion against Western Saturday night, went to the bench for a minute, got back in the game, hit a go-ahead three with a minute left and then passed out at the foul line. But people don't wanna read about heroics like that, they only wanna hear how great Davidson and Stephen Curry are.

Yep, that's about right. People DO only want to hear about Davidson. It's because the Wildcats are tearing it up in the SoCon, and have a real shot at beating major teams if they make it to the tournament. I will point out that Davidson played better against Duke than Carolina did! And Carolina had a real home advantage, not Bobcats Arena. Keep writing about Davidson, because we're going to need to know about these Wildcats before the madness begins.

PLEASE KEEP writing about Davidson. It's nice to hear about a successful basketball program (successfull on the court & in the class room) If I'm not mistaken the basketball program has a 99% graduation rate.

I have a compromise idea for Observerblows. I know App St is not being mentioned as much as you would like. Perhaps we could impose on the Observer to review all 38 points Curry poured in up in Boone after a little bit of bush league harrassment from your PA announcer. IF only I had taped it. Good thing I read the Observer the next day because they gave both teams the coverage they deserved that day. OUCH! Keep begging for more coverage, you're sure to get it.

Davidson beat App easily earlier this year and will beat them easily again soon. Obviously not a smart move by Kellen Brand to play in that type of situation although he is a good player. Keep writing about the Cats on this blog and perhaps give them a little more pub in the real paper!

Kevin is assigned to report for Davidson. I'm sure Boone has a reporter with sole responsibility for covering App St. I don't know of any other SoCon teams getting press in Charlotte.

TOB, Here's an idea: check out the sidebar and read Kevin Cary's bio. He covers Davidson. It's his job. What school do you think he's going to write about? Here's another idea: look at a map. Davidson is right outside Charlotte; I'm sure North Wilkesboro has a fine paper that gives Appalachian lots of coverage.

Maybe Kevin should "right" about that good loss tonight for the Appies against Charleston.

Hey, I've got an idea. Instead of ranting about App. State, lets talk about how absurd it would be to take one of the best pure shooters in Division I and make him a point guard.

That's a move that would weaken the team at two positions.

Surely, there's someone out there who next year will be able to get the ball up the court and into Curry's hands.

Actually,

The Winston-Salem paper does a great job covering the Mountaineers and is fortunate enough to be able to cover a football team as well.

Unlike the non-49ers football team and Davidson's "club" team.

But, back to the point, literally. McKillop should work to find another answer (maybe a juco or European transfer) to fill the point.

While it'll help develop Curry's overall game, he'll have a hard time passing to himself for an open 3 pointer.

Maybe he's right. I think the Observer should run a big article tomorrow on App's loss to Chucktown last night.

Maybe I should sit down for an interview with the Observer and tell them about the App State fan who grabbed me by the neck and threatened to kill me as I was walking out of Belk Arena following last year's LOSS to App State. If that's how your rabid, drunk fans treat victory, I'd hate to encounter your supporters after a loss. Actually, I look forward to encountering your fans after a loss. I'm going to the Davidson-App game, after all.

Re: the kid coming back in after a concussion:

"heroics" like that should get your trainer fired.

And when the Watauga Democrat covers Davidson, we'll make room for the Mountaineers in the Observer.

It also might help if you belonged on the same court.

Davidson has academic standards unlike App State and UNC-Concrete, they can't just go pick up any JUCO point guard they want. Brendan Mckillop and Aaron Bond (red shirting this year) would start for App RIGHT NOW, yet they are only "possible options" for the Cats next year.

You want an academic institution? Go to Elon. Davidson isn't even in the same ballpark in that category so get off your high horse.

From a Charlotte fan who took care of both App and Davidson:

The great Bracketologist Andy Katz released a new mock selection and according to him the selection committee is not going to reward Davidson for losses against a grueling non-conference schedule, close as they might have been. That being said, the SoCon gets one bid from the conference tournament and he handed it to App giving them a 13th seed. Quite interesting. I'm not saying he's right but the man is able to pick near 99% of the field every year.

I meant bracketologist Joe Lunardi. Andy Katz did his own but also has App as a 13. Sorry.

Davidson beat App by 15 already this year, they will beat them by at least 15 again at home and will beat them in the tournament if App makes it to the Championship. The mock selection was based on IF Davidson wins out and loses in the championship would they get in... 1 mock bracket said yes 1 said no. Davidson WILL win the socon tourney!

and if you are in anyway serious about Elon being a better academic institution than Davidson you are an idiot.

Just in case "Theobserverblows" missed it in the paper, I wanted him to know that APP was able to pull out an overtime win against The Mighty Citadel last night. That should have been sweet music after getting their collective jerseys pulled over their heads and beaten like Randall Tex Cobb earlier in the week at HOME against a pathetic College of Charleston team in front of their HOME CROWD and that BUSH LEAGUE announcer. Looking forward to seeing you in Davidson -- its gonna be fun. Bring your lunch, its gonna be a long day.

Elon, better than Davidson Academically..... really?

Really?

Maybe you should be up in boone with the rest of the App St. Potheads!
