Wolfpack close to hiring Lutz

New N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried is close to hiring former Charlotte 49ers head coach Bobby Lutz as an assistant, a source close to the situation says.

Lutz's presence would put a decidedly 49ers stamp on the Wolfpacks staff. Former Lutz assistant Orlando Early was also hired by Gottfried earlier this week.

Lutz spent last season as an assistant at Iowa State after he was fired by Charlotte following the 2009-10 season. He is Charlotte's all-time winningest coach and had a 12-year record of 218-158. -- David Scott

I thought this might happen. Gottfried and Lutz are friends. Their schools played a home-and-home. Good move.

Hope they don't put his offense in.
Yikes!

That would be a great fit for State.

Steve, nothing wrong with his offense. Its the execution thereof that some players had a problem with. Remember Diego Garcia? Probably the best player Lutz ever had.

Welcome home Coach, assuming you accept the position. Now lets schedule UNCC with in Charlotte or Raleigh and show Rose what a mistake she made.

I'm a Niner first, but NCSU will become my 2nd favorite bball team if they hire Bobby. Not to mention Gottried has already hired our former assistant Orlando Early and are rumored to be after longtime Lutz friend/assistant coach Rob Moxley. That would mean all 3 NCSU assistants would be former Niners!

I think this would be a good hire. This is starting to look like a solid staff with good, experienced teachers of the game.

Go get'em Mark!!

There has never been a Diego Garcia to play for the Niners. Diego Guevera was a very good player but not Lutz's best, Eddie Basden was, in my opinion. Any way good luck to Coach Lutz. He will always be a Niner first and is a class act. The Wolfpack is starting to look a lot like the Niner coaching staff from the early 2000's. Very talented if they would get rid of Gottfried.

I think Moxley is a done deal

Somebody needs to be there to step in when Gottfried starts to stink like a rotting turnip.

Awesome for Bobby, he has passion and NC State fans will be happy with it. I would say being NC State's top assistant coach maybe be a better position then UNCC's Head Coach. Bobby is now into the ACC and good things will come to him.

I think hiring Lutz shows that Gottfried is more mature than most folks have given him credit. The best leaders surround themselves with those that are smarter and capable to delivering results. Gottfried will do a very nice job if the players will listen and be disciplined. It will be nice to have another program with a talented staff and the ability to keep a few more players in the ACC.

Bobby Lutz is a great coach and a good hire for state. He needed a change of venue due to recruiting problems at Charlotte. When he had good players, like Eddie Basden (the best Lutz had at Charlotte), Lutz won the conference in Conference USA which was a good basketball conference.

2:00 Anon is a troll.

Sorry, but head coach at Charlotte might be a better job than at NC State. Why do you think so many coaches turned them down and they got a SEC retread who couldn't cut it at Alabama to be the coach just because he worked for ESPN.

Last 20yrs of College Basketball, Charlotte is 3rd best team in North Carolina behind UNC/Duke....State is 5th.

GREAT news. I came here from KY. Gottfried was my hopeful choice to succeed Denny Crum at Louisville. Lutz was always an adversary during UofL's stint in C-USA. I don't see a problem with Lutz' offense. BOTH of these coaches are solid in the last 5 minutes of the game. Heel fans, I'm sorry, but your coach is weak in that area. This is good news for State.

I hope he has to ask people to turn off radios during his post-game comments.

Anon 2:

The top assistant job at State is NOT better than the head coach at Charlotte. I'm sorry but your dreaming. There is a little more prestige of coaching in the ACC, but Charlotte is not too far behind. Once the new recruits come in and coach Major takes the reigns, I think Charlotte might be considered the 3rd best program in NC...again. State will be 4th or 5th. We just pulled a Wake assistant to be our football HC, that says something.

I see haters are going to hate. Come back in here in about three years when we are running all over every team in the NCAA.

NCSU basketball hasn't been relevant since 1983.

UNCC basketball hasn't been relevant in even longer.

A great hire if true. Lutz is a fantastic coach. I think he suffered with recruiting good players playing in the A-10. Nobody cares about the A-10 down this way. I'm a huge State fan who went to Charlotte. I'm impressed with what I've seen and heard from Gottfried, and I think Lutz is a very strong hire.

3:29, I hate to jump on you (because I agree with you about Lutz) but why in the he!! are you a State fan if you went to Charlotte? This is Charlotte's biggest problem---our own pulling for some other school. Give me a break!!!

I received my undergraduate degree from UNCC and my graduate degree from NC State. I hope this news turns out to be true. Wonderful hire for State. I was really PO'ed when Lutz was let go by UNCC. The new coach there really seemed to work out well this past year (note sarcasm).

Coach Lutz is a great guy! Welcome him back to the carolinas with open arms.

Anon 3:46 - I'd like to see you do better than Major did with a 9-man team. Lutz is an excellent X & O coach but is a putrid recruiter, hence the bad teams we had his last 3 years here. He succeeded Melvin Watkins, who was a great recruiter but iffy on the Xs & Os (and was a money-hungry back-stabber, as it turned out). We haven't had a coach who could teach and recruit since Jeff Mullins. The fact that we managed to win 10 games with half a squad tells me Major can coach. Now we'll see if he can recruit.

As far as State goes, hiring Lutz is a major win for them as long as Gottfried has him teaching and not recruiting.

J, ur crazy......Lutz didnt recruit particularly well to the A10, but he was a great recruiter in CUSA. Maybe, Withers, White, Demon Brown, Jobey Thomas, Eddie Basden, etc. ring a bell.......

Maybe UNC-C and NC State can schedule a home-and-home intercollegiate slapping contest between their respective, post-menopausal Athletic Directors, Debbie Yow (NCSU) and Judy Rose (Charlotte). It's absolutely the only way that either one of them could qualify as a winner in any respect!

Anonymous said...

I bet both Rose and Yow could beat Dick Baddour in a fist fight

the "zipper Play" for lutz and Gottfried have totally different meanings.

Anonymous said...

So this makes 2 seasons that no program with an opening will think Lutz is qualified to be a head man?

Best news I've received in awhile...Great hire if it happens. Bobby gets closer to home and in the ACC with TALENT! Something he couldn't get and never would have gotten at UNCC. Im a Duke fan but can I can see me wearing Red/White/ now...Awesome, Awesome, Awesome for Bobby...Bobby is the best x/o guy out there and you will see how well he recruits now that he is in ACC.....Go pack!

Anonymous said...

Yeah right.....Bobby NEVER got ANY talent at Charlotte. I guess all those NCAA trips were all based on his coaching. I think Eddie Basden, Rodney White (NBA Lottery pick as a freshman) and others would beg to differ.

Congrats to a class act Bobby Lutz. At least you will finally be covered by the Observer now. What a joke of a newspaper. Any way NC State you got a great coach! He is better than your head coach. If you get Moxley you will have to change your team colors to green.

Awesome for Lutz. He is a class act. Too bad Judy Rose wouldn't give him any infrastucture to compete. Charlotte will suck to the highest order with Judy Rose.

Joe Price said...

Its hard to fathom Judy Rose still employed. She is tearing the program down brick by brick. Been a fan 30 years. Its sad.

WOW! This is a great hire. Now if NCSU can hire Derick Whittenburg they will have a Northeast connection. Derick knows all the high school coaches in NY, NJ, & Conn.

I think Bob Lutz will be an even better coach (and I think he is already a very good coach now) after rubbing elbows with all the ACC coaches for a couple of years.

I hate to admit it but UNCC is a dead duck if NCSU gets Moxley & Lutz. Oh, they are already a dead duck. I should have said a cooked goose. Thanks for nutin Judy.

I'm thrilled to see Bobby is returning to the state. It probably was time for a change at Charlotte but he was done wrong by Judy Rose and Phil Dubois. The athletic program has gone to pot under Rose recently. Now she's lost the big winner there, Karen Aston. And she hires a defensive coordinator from Wake Forest as a football coach, who's last two defenses were no better than 10th in the ACC. It doesn't take a Duke degree to know that he was a short-timer at WF with the same results this upcoming season. He convinced her and now has high-paying job security for six years.

Charlotte has missed the opportunity to be relevant in basketball again, meanwhile things are finally looking up for NC State.

Hey 8:14, you dont know what you're talking about in regards to Lambert. His defense was only ranked poorly the last 2 years because the WF offense was the WORST and couldnt stay on the field. Lambert's resume is VERY strong over the course of his career. Last season was the exception, not the rule. You will see.

Congratulations to Coach Lutz.

Curious how the tides change over time though. All the Lutz detractors in the observer comments sections during his last few years at Charlotte calling for his head and painting the Niners as a 3-ball chucking joke are now the ones signing his praises as a "great coach" and "spectacular recruiter."

Lutz's system is high-risk, high-reward, and very frustrating if you don't have the right players in place. He gave his alma mater a number of good years but ultimately it was time for both sides to finally move on. His recruiting started to fizzle out and 5 years with no NCAA berths is unacceptable; Lutz himself said so.

I hope Lutz is successful in his future ventures. He will always be a Niner. But please spare me the "great coach" moniker because for years, the ACC knob-slobbing retards that read this newspaper were the ones talking about what a joke our program had become under Lutz.

You could combine NCSU & UNCC's teams and you still wouldn't have an ACC worthy squad!

Anonymous said...

Awesome! I actually hoped he would be considered for the head spot. This will be great... And Lutz can be the heir apparent.
