UNC, UAB to play 3-year basketball series beginning with 2012 season

North Carolina and UAB have agreed to play a three-year basketball series, beginning with a game this season at the Smith Center in Chapel Hill.

Larry Gallo, UNC's senior associate athletic director who handles the men's basketball schedule, said on Tuesday that dates have not been finalized and that the two schools are still completing contractual details of the series.

Jerod Haase, who spent nine years on Roy Williams' staff at UNC, left the school in March to become the head coach at UAB. The Blazers will meet the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill during the 2012-13 season. The Tar Heels will travel to Birmingham, Ala., during the 2013-14 season.

The teams will return to Chapel Hill in the 2014-15 season. Gallo said he expects UNC's full 2012-13 schedule to be released in early August.

Great to see ol' Roy demonstrating class and loyalty once again, unlike that guy eight miles away who won't come out of his coffin to play a true road game.

Last year UNC played Monmouth (King Rice) and Appalachian (Jason Capel) and also opened UNC-Asheville's new gym (Roy is from Asheville).

How many times did K-Ratefsky schedule Oklahoma (Capel) or Mizzoui (Snyder), Stanford (Dawkins) or ND (Brey) total? None?

Williams also schedules "home" games for his upperclassmen.

Definitely CLASS vs. (same word but without the C or the L).

Chapel Hill fans are talking about class. That's funny. Chapel Hill along with Penn State are the anathema of college sports these days.

I love Heels fans talking about Chapel Hill having class. Apparently quite a few of them offer A's without requiring instruction or attendance! Plenty of Roy’s boys have benefited from these courses too – not just the football team.

Regardless, I’m glad to see this series. I’ll be pulling for the Blazers!

Not getting into the UNC/Duke aspect this discussion. Williams handles these things with class, period. The majority of these teams with less experienced coaches struggle to get BCS schools to schedule them, especially for home and away series. Kudos to Roy.

He schedules these games because the teams are coached by UNC people. Roy is like many UNC alums in that he really, really believes (sometimes against all evidence) that Chapel Hill is blue heaven and its denizens are true angels. If I were a UNC fan, the very last thing I'd bring up would be whether K or Roy had more "class". By the way, I am not a Duke fan.

Tarcheat losers enviously taking shots at our country's head coach.

Hide the Duke jealousy for one measly month and root for Team USA. Then, go back to worrying about your scandal-ridden mess of an institution that you got waitlisted at.

Home games for seniors, huh? Like the one Kyle Singler got in Portland against his little brother and Oregon a whopping two years ago? Or the one Jon Scheyer got in Chicago? Or the three NYC games Zoubek, Lance Thomas, and Greg Paulus all got as seniors.

And they sure seem scared to play away from Durham. Like the tournament they played in KC featuring a top-five Kansas State team...who they beat by 14? Or when they stomped #13 UConn in the Preseason NIT in NYC? Yeah, they must have had a DECIDED regional advantage there.

And he has NO appreciation for former coaches, like say Mike Dement, who he played at UNCG's home in the game where he passed Dean Smith's win record.

Sure, Duke could schedule a series against some sub-125 ranked team but, umm, what would be the point? They play actual good teams.

Man, what a mess over at Chapel Hole...

I'll give you the K-State game in KC but the games at MSG? Do you know how many Duke alums live in the New York area?

Did you know that Roy Williams has coached one NBA All-Star in his entire 25-year career (Paul Pierce at Kansas)?

How does UNCheat still get recruits? Oh, I know how...they cheat!

I wanted to say something in response to one of the comments by someone who did not even give his name and badmouthed Chapel Hill fans, I think it was not called for and he is such an ignorant
