Tar Heels drop to No. 8 in polls; Duke No. 4

Following its 90-57 loss against Florida State on Saturday, North Carolina dropped five spots from No. 3 to No. 8 in the weekly Associated Press top 25 poll, which was released on Monday afternoon.

The Tar Heels, who play at Virginia Tech on Saturday, are also No. 8 in the coaches’ poll.

Duke is the highest-rated ACC team in both polls, and the Blue Devils hold the same No. 4 ranking in each.

Virginia, which is 15th in the AP and 17th in the coaches’, is the only other ACC team to be ranked in either poll.

Florida State, by the way, received a single No. 25 vote in the AP poll. The Seminoles didn’t receive any votes in the coaches’ poll.

The UNC Tar Heels have elite talent this year, yet they are clearly underachieving on the court. The Tar Heels have the talent to win the NCAA tournament and they have the ability to get knocked out before the Sweet 16 even rolls in March. You just don't know how this team will perform, come The Big Dance.

As for Duke, they don't scare the elite teams. They are ranked higher, as always, due to their name and reputation. Could they go on a run, be bracket favorably in the tournament and end up in the Final Four? Absolutely! Yet, could the Blue Devils just as easily be put in a bracket with other teams that match up better against Duke's weaknesses, so Coach K's boys get bumped off early? Most assuredly.

Neither UNC or Duke has shown, at least at this stage of the season, that they are anything more than a Top 20 team. We'll see how it unfolds in the next two months.

I agree Bono.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the ACC is as possibly weak as it has ever been.

UNC seems worse now than they were to start the season....but that trend has almost always occurred with Roy.

How Carolina is still in the top 10 is beyond me. They weren't just beat bad by an average unranked FSU team, but they got schooled, in every aspect of the game!

Can't remember the last time a Preseason #1 has flopped this badly...

Then again, weren't the NIT Heels Preseason #4 in 2010??
