Most shocking blowout loss in UNC history?

Where, exactly, does North Carolina's 33-point loss at FSU rank on the shock meter? I don’t think anyone could be that surprised that UNC lost this game. That wasn’t so shocking. But the way in which the Tar Heels lost – by being completely blown out – was.

I posed the question on Twitter yesterday (you can follow me @_andrewcarter) asking for opinions about whether this was the most the most lopsidedly shocking defeat in school history.

Of course, the Tar Heels have lost games by greater margins. But for a team with these kind of expectations surrounding it, and with a No. 3 national ranking, you could easily argue what happened on Saturday was the most surprising blowout loss in school history.

Quitters on the court and off. Get used to the new "Carolina Way" No child left behind went out the window, the day Ole Roy abandoned ship and left the scrubs to find their way to the locker room.

Will someone please give Florida State some credit for this whipping up on UNC? They played awesome.

That CUPCAKE schedule will get you every time! Try playing a few tough nonconference road teams, and then you might be prepared for an unranked bottom feeder like fsu.UNCheat is a joke!

Cupcake non-conference schedule?? Be serious. The heels played Wisconsin at home, Kentucky at Rupp Arena and Michigan State on a damn aircraft carrier in their "cupcake" non-conference schedule this year.

Depending on whether you look at RPI, Sagarin, Pomeroy, etc, UNC's strength of schedule thus far this season is somewhere between about 50th and 100th in the nation. @Kentucky and neutral site vs. Michigan State are no doubt tough non-conference matchups.

But then you have the other opponents. Powerhouses, like Nicholls State (2-12) and Monmouth (3-16). UNC played 2 teams with top-10 SOS, and another 5 with SOS above 200.

HAWWW Haw haw haw haw haw! UNC stinks! LMAO!

FSU spanked UNC. So what? They started 4 Seniors and a Junior and have been up for this game for the past 3 years. Dook will lose at FSU this year too, b/c Dook is soft on the inside. UNC will win the ACC in the end. Will reload with McDonald's All-Americans again and again like we always do. We beat Dook twice this year, and add to our overall 131-101 total versus the Dookies. UNC-Cheat blah, blah blah..We are CAROLINA! Deal with it!!

The Heels were obliterated by the Noles. Devastating loss. It felt like an uppercut from a 1988 Iron Mike Tyson (before he lost his power...and all of his mind). Good teams don't get beat by 33 by FSU, much less a Florida State team without Bobby Sura and Sammy Cassell. Carolina was pathetic.

Henson appears to be somewhat of a headcase. I also don't think the poor chap is very bright. Barnes is a very good player. He is not a great player. He also is not explosive (the only explosive athlete we have is Strickland and he can't shoot or handle the ball particularly well. He would make a good FS in football). Marshall is slow. He also can't shoot. Zeller is a little soft, but you can't ask much more out of him -- except to grow a pair. Bullock is a good player and should play more. Hairston too.

Roy is a terrible coach. The man can recruit and that is usually enough. With 2 titles and probably another one or perhaps even 2 before he hangs it up, 'ol Roy will go down as one of the greatest. Unfortunately, and with respect to Xs and Os, I'd rather have my CYO coach captain the Blue and White.

Heels will make the Sweet 16. Whether or not they make the Final Four depends on whether or not Barnes catches fire down the stretch.

Agreed that 'Ol Roy isn't the best in-game coach. He's probably a good high school in-game coach. However, as the previous poster point out, it doesn't really matter as long as Roy continues to recruit. I agree he will retire with 3 or 4 national titles. I mean, the man already has 2 rings and he brings in Top 5 recruiting classes every year.

What's sad is that we have no offense except to - at a very rapid pace - run up and down the court. We need a Stackhouse or Carter or McCants or Felton or Lawson....someone explosive WITH skills. Without an explosive ruthless scorer, our offense will continue to kind of suck and be nothing more than throw it inside and hope are big men don't get scared or -- like last year -- put it all on Harrison to throw up contested jump shots. Harrison may not be great, but he's damn close. He's also the reason we won big games last year and the reason Kentucky didn't kill us this year is bc the man can straight up shoot.

No the Terps blew out NC by 40 points some years back. I know I watched it on tv.

GO TERPS!!!!!

Fantastic. Not a single response attempts to address the discussion posed in the the original post. You stay classy/on topic ABCers. It's a real good look... My vote goes to the Kansas Final Four blowout in 2008 as the most shocking. This one's close, but the stakes not nearly as high. Would like to hear if any old-timers can point to games not played in the last 15 years.

What a waste of an article! Why not do a little research and compare this loss to other "shocking" losses in the past?

The worst loss in history was when Mhaktar thought it was good idea to draw a tech in the 1998 National Semi-Final against Utah before justifying his lapse by accusing one of the white Utah oafs of racism. Of course Mahktar lied. Worse than our marvelous Nigerian liar was the fact that somehow Coach Gut managed to lose to Michael Doleac with Jamison and Vince.

I wonder if Duke or Wake or State has ever lost a game to WEBER STATE lolol

Anon @ 6:30; Does Dook remember VCU in 2007??

When will Tar Heel fans recognize that Roy Williams cares about one thing: himself. His "aw shucks" charade gets really old after awhile.

Defense is seriously lacking! Ole roy does not know how to handle the talent he has. As for being a recruiter, anybody can recruit for carolina. Nobody comes to carolina to play for ole roy..they come because lots of elite 8s, final 4s, 6 national championships, michael jordan, phil ford, rick fox, james worthy, sam perkins, tyler hansbough, dean smith, etc. ole roy is just an average coach with lots of talents. EVEN I, CAN COACH CAROLINA AND WIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wins and loses in the beginning of the year are not really that shocking, especially for conference games. Rankings still contain a little pre-season speculative hype that set a false framework back in April. College kids are more emotional than pros and bad and good games can be REALLY bad and really good. Sometimes they happen on the same night and it gets ugly. Not a big deal. FSU was the better team.

Anon 7:00 (I'll also round to the nearest 5th minute):

Wasn't Weber State a 15 seed and UNC a 2 seed? If I recall, Duke was a 7 and VCU was a 10? Either way, I'm not a Duke fan, but that Weber State loss was pretty bad. Arguably worse than the FSU game on Saturday.

UNC vs Maryland 01/09/2002
79-112 Coach Matt Dougherty

That's 33 as well, and not even remotely as shocking. This Carolina team was ranked 3rd, that one wasn't ranked at all. In fact, that team went 8-20, but if it makes you feel better...

Anonymous said...

Not a "shock" at all, but 82-50 Duke smackdown 2 years ago was a more thorough beating than FSU. Heels were down 27 AT THE HALF. Second half shouldn't have even been played.

All I know is that on the "Duke-Fan-O-Meter" it rates as a "9/A real hoot!"

You could see the diffenence between Roy and coach K during warmups at last years ACC Championship.UNC players were dunking ,chatting with the media and alums and generally basking in their stardom.Coach K had his players running drills shooting from set positions etc. he had their head in the game.As a heels fan in pains me to say carolina was totally out coached.

I agree Roy isn't a great coach. Still, I don't really care as long as he recruits. If he ends his tenure with 3+ titles, he will truly go down as one of the 10 greatest coaches in the history of college b-ball.

I'm sick of fans who worship K. K is a much better coach than Roy, but Roy will - worst case - have one less championship than the ferrit once it's all said and done. I really believe Roy will end up with 4.

Coach K is a prick. Exhaustion and back problems? He "resigned" mid-season bc his team blew and then "returned" the next year before firing his long-time assistant coach for doing what K was too scared to do --- coach a team that wasn't that good. Of course K petitioned the NCAA to remove the losses from his record -- losses he would have (directly) incurred had he not quit on his entire team for the better part of the season.

Worst loss in UNC history was on Saturday. Pathetic. Heels will be back though.

Worst loss in UNC Women's history as well!! (51-point laugher vs. UConn)

I'm no old timer, but I nominate the loss to Virginia in Charlottesville on Jan 15, 1989. The score was 106-83 Virginia. UNC was ranked #8, UVa was unranked and had, well, nobody. UNC had JR Reid, Hu.Davis, Rick Fox etc. I can still see Scott Williams slinging his shoulders like a frustrated child...

Anonymous said...

Virginia had a lot more than "nobody" on that 1989 team that lost to eventual champs Michigan in the Elite 8. Anyway, that UVa team had a few all-ACC players (John Crotty and Richard Morgan) and a freshman who finished his career at Virginia as perhaps its best all-around player in its history (Bryant Stith). Plus there were some other solid players -- Brent Dabbs, Kenny Turner, Matt Blundin.
