Duke recruiting for 2014 taking shape

It's not too often that a high-level basketball recruit publicly identifies his dream school from the start of his recruiting process.

But that's exactly what Grayson Allen, a shooting guard from Jacksonville Providence High, did. He told everyone that would listen that he wanted to go to Duke, and he became Duke's first 2014 commit shortly after Jeff Capel, Steve Wojciechowski and Mike Krzyzewski visited him at home and extended him an offer. You can read the full story on Allen here.

There isn't a great historical comparison from Duke's past for Allen, according to ESPN senior recruiting analyst Dave Telep.

"He’s different," Telep said of Allen. "Everyone always likes to say, ‘well, who is he like, but they haven’t had a guy like this. This guy, you can plug him in different spots, and he can be successful. The fact that he has a basketball IQ as both a passer, shooter and scorer is a big deal."

So there's that to look for in the 2014-15 season. And here is a quick rundown of Duke's other major targets for that year, listed in relative priority order:

PG Tyus Jones, Apple Valley, Minnesota. AAU: Howard Pulley Panthers
C Jahlil Okafor , Whitney Young, Chicago. AAU: Mac irvin Fire
---
SF Justise Winslow, St. Johns, Houston. AAU: Houston Hoops
PF Kevon Looney, Milwaukee Hamilton, Mikwaukee. AAU: Milwaukee Rebels
PF Trey Lyles, Arsenal Technical, Indianapolis. AAU: Spiece Indy Heat
----
SF Theo Pinson, Wesleyan Christian Academy, Greensboro. AAU: CP3 All-Stars
SG Devin Booker, Moss Point, Mississippi. AAU: Alabama Challenge

The last two guys, Pinson and Booker, have overlapping skills with Allen, so it would be pretty surprising if either ended up in Duke's 2014 class. Jones and Okafor have repeatedly said they are a package deal and are the clear top targets of the class.

As it stands right now, there are eight offers (including Allen's), for four open spots in the 2014 class (Tyler Thornton, Josh Hairston, Andre Dawkins and Todd Zafirovski will all move on and free up scholarships). That doesn't factor in anyone leaving early, and Rodney Hood, Jabari Parker and Rasheed Sulaimon will certainly be candidates to do that depending on how the season goes.

Recruiting is all about having options—for the players and for the offering teams. Keep an eye on those names going forward.

How are duke and nc state crushing Carolina in recruiting???

Carolina has two top 20 prospects signed for 2014, they are also looking to add either Vaughan, winslow, or booker. They'll have 3 kids on the top 20 once its all said and one, I consider that a pretty good class

UNC hasn't had a good recruit since Hansbrough.

Zeller, Barnes and Macadoodle stank it up and were weak. All their top recruits left or underachieved.

Roy is toast! Cuse and Pitt gonna eat Roy's lunch...along with duke, state, miami, and others....

what happened?

zeller stank it up??

ACC Player of the year and second team all american as a senior.

i'll give you barnes and mcadoo but not zeller

That is true, Zeller was better than I like to recall. Ran the floor fantastically for a big.

Glad you agree that Barnes was not much...very weak. Most UNC fans lie to themselves about Barnes, blinded by the baby blue.

Ha Ha really nc state?? Roy has lost to nc state I believe twice now since hes been in Chapel Hill?

Zeller was ACC player of the year and a second team all-American. Barnes was actually a pretty good player, Carolina was on the path to the national title game in 2012 until marshall got hurt. McAdoo is a great athlete who is a natural 4, last year he was stuck playing out of position at the 5 which hurt is abilities, hes not a back up post player. McAdoo will have a good year this year.

Nc State is always average and never will be more, this year they were supposed to do big things and they ended up 5th in the ACC in a down year for the conference. Duke is always going to be great as long as Coach K is there.

Roy isn't the best coach in the country, but he can recruit and bring in talent. 2 national titles since 2005 is pretty impressive if you ask me.

Carolina is going to be very good next year, Hairston is going to break out, they have some good young talent coming in and marcus paige is going to be a stud. If they land wiggins that puts them in the top 5 all season, without wiggins they are a top 10-15 team all year.

ahhh, yes if Marshall hadn't been hurt you'd have easily won 2012

KY destroyed everyone. Marshall going down was a nice out for Roy.

since when was barnes a weak recruit?! hilarious. because guys start on playoff teams as rookie's all the time right?

No your right KY "easily" beat everyone...what a joke. They played in December and it was a 2 point game in Lexington, Carolina was a bad matchup for Kentucky at 100% and if you don't agree with that then you obviously didn't watch basketball that year. With a strong zeller and Henson down low, Davis had his hands full. The biggest key of the game would of been marshall vs Teague and yea Teague may be more athletic, but I woulda taken marshall. Regardless the title game would have been a great match-up between two great teams. But your right dude Carolina basketball just sucks right?

Actually I never said Carolina would of easily won in 2012 if marshall was healthy, I said they had a great path to make the national title game, which is a fact

Wouldn't have beaten Kansas in 2012 regardless...like it or not KU has UNC's number year in and year out.

Just like Lehigh has dook's number, I guess. How does it feel, dookies, to own one of THE MOST embarrasing losses in NCAA history? That's why you are dook.

Duke has lost so many recruits since Roy came in. Coach K (whiny) wanted Barnes coming out of high school so badly that Duke hated him the whole time. It just irked him that Barnes chose UNC over Duke.

Heck, Roy has irked Coack K so bad in recruiting that Coach K resorted to doing credit card commercials to do his recruiting. I havent seen Roy have to do commercials to recruit. He is good enough without doing them.
