UNC coach Roy Williams disappointed in NCAA tournament selection committee

North Carolina coach Roy Williams voiced his displeasure earlier Sunday with the NCAA tournament selection committee, which awarded three ACC teams with at-large bids for the NCAA tournament.

Miami, which defeated North Carolina 87-77 in the ACC tournament championship game on Sunday, earned the ACC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Hurricanes became the first team in history not to receive a No. 1 seed after winning both the ACC regular season outright and winning the conference tournament.

Duke, which finished second to Miami in the regular season, received a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Tar Heels and N.C. State are both No. 8 seeds.

"I am somewhat surprised and disappointed that only four ACC teams are in the field and that the league only received two No. 2 and two No. 8 seeds," Williams said in a statement UNC released on Sunday night. "I think the ACC deserved better than that."

While Williams expressed frustration that only four ACC teams made the field, he kept private his thoughts about a potential matchup against Kansas in the round of 32. If UNC, seeded eighth in the South Region, beats Villanova on Friday, the Tar Heels would likely advance to play against Williams' old team.

The possibility of that is likely to come up a time or two this week.

Same thing every year. ACC coaches bitch about the ACC not receiving more bids. Bogus complaint.

Next highest Rpi in the Acc is Maryland in the mid 60's.
Contrary to Roy's belief, that isn't good enough.

Williams, you are a whiner. Win the ACC Tourney and get your deserved seating.

Oooh, Roy almost made it through a season without saying something absurd! So close!

What's amazing to me is how little reading comprehension some of you have. The article said he was disappointed in the number of teams selected. Your comments are without merit and evolved from the cow-chips inside your skulls.

To the guy who said: Win the ACC Tourney and get your deserved seating.
How did that work out for Miami?

The Atlantic 10 got 5 bids. Most Observer readers don't realize that it is a better conference than the ACC.

Valid point. Also valid is the point that Roy is wrong in this case. The ACC got what it deserved. Why is UNC releasing a statement containing Roy's criticism, anyway? That seems a little petty to me.

The A16 is a good conference, but getting five bids does not make it superior to the ACC, since it has four more teams. Of course, your point that the Observer loves the ACC is valid.

Any bets on how many of those A10/16 teams are left after the first weekend? This was one of the worst years ever for the ACC overall, so I don't have a problem with just 4 teams. But Gonzaga over Miami, or even Duke, for a 1 seed? Give me a freaking break. And somebody must really love seeing UNC go up against Kansas out there every year. And at least Roy has the balls to speak up for his league, along with K. I'm sure his fellow coaches appreciate his going to bat for them, even if it's not valid this year, and I'm also sure he could care less what nimrods on an Observer board are saying about him as well.

As well as UNC has played recently, the committee seemed to heavily way how you fared on the road. The best win UNC had on the road was MD. Are Creighton, SD St., Notre Dame, and Illinois better than UNC right now?

ACC got exactly the teams in that deserved it. Every year everyone whines.....if you really want in, win your tournament or shut up.

Roy should probably be focusing on playing Villanova and stop whining(I know he can't help himself). Everyone is looking to the Kansas matchup, I don't think Roy can make it with his coaching....'Nova has beaten some great teams this year and play in a better conference than UNC does.

I'm a KY fan and am glad they got left out, even though a "big name", they stunk it up this year and deserved to be in the NIT. It is hilarious and good humbling for them, no whining here....just play the game.

I'm a Duke fan and I'm not complaining about the #2 seed.

Yes, we're #1 in the RPI - but guess what? We looked awful against Maryland; couldn't make an open look if their lives depended on it (4-24 from 3). They deserve a 2, I'll take it and move on.

My point: quit whining and play.

Guess those ole' cow chips in their heads told 'em it was only a matter of time before Roy would be whining about his teams seed as well!
