Roy wants to be liked by all, but that's impossible

Kansas hadn’t even completed its win over Memphis in the NCAA championship game Monday night when an e-mail from an angry reader arrived.

Two nights after Kansas crushed North Carolina 84-66 in the NCAA semifinals, Roy Williams was in the stands at the championship game wearing Kansas gear.

Some North Carolina fans want to know if their coach’s loyalties are with the Tar Heels or Kansas, which he coached for 15 years before coming to North Carolina in 2003.

The answer is easy. Williams’ heart always is with the players he’s currently coaching. He always seems devastated when a season ends without an NCAA title, and this season is no exception.

North Carolina did not look well prepared Saturday as Kansas stormed to a 40-12, first-half lead. Fans who believe Williams should have used a timeout earlier to stop the Jayhawks’ momentum have a legitimate gripe.

But Kansas simply was the better team and would have beaten North Carolina regardless of whether Williams, Dean Smith or Red Auerbach was coaching the Tar Heels.

Why would Williams wear Kansas apparel after the Jayhawks clobbered his team? I haven’t had a chance to ask him, but here’s a guess.

Unlike many coaches, Williams wants everybody to like him. That’s usually an endearing trait. He is generous with fans, and no ACC basketball coach makes more of an effort to give the media interesting material than Williams.

Many Kansas fans resented him, though, after he left for North Carolina. Some expected him to coach there until he retired, and they turned against him. Williams was hurt to hear that a poster bearing his image was placed facing the toilet in a rest room they call “Roy’s Room” at the Downtown Barbershop in Lawrence, Kan.

Wearing Kansas gear might have been his way of trying to show those fans that he still cares about them. Many Kansas fans will be able to forgive and forget Williams now that successor Bill Self brought them something Williams never did – an NCAA title.

Those who still can’t forgive him will hold grudges forever, so it’s pointless to try to change their minds.

Problem is, now Williams angered North Carolina fans. They expected an NCAA title this season from the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed. They didn’t get it after losing in such a way that Williams apologized to his players for not having them ready for Kansas.

Seeing him on CBS in Kansas gear after that was difficult to stomach. No matter how much you want everybody to like you, you’re always going to offend somebody when you’re in the public eye.

That might be the lesson Williams learns from his first meeting with Kansas as North Carolina’s coach.

I'm not even a Carolina fan, but I still think it was insulting to Carolina fans for him to wear the Kansas logo at the game. That's like rubbing salt in Carolina's wounds. If he's so confused as to where his loyalties lie, he needs to go back to Kansas.

Poor little fella. Everybody is mad at Old Roy. Maybe he'll cry again.

Sitting at that game wearing Kansas gear was the dumbest thing Williams could have done. He's either that ignorant, or he really doesn't care about his team and his fanbase as much as he pretends to.

Geesh, I just wish everyone could move on. It's like people make up reason to talk about anything UNC. It's time for them to get over their overall successful basketball season and look forward to being the 6th best football team in the state!
The horse is dead, leave it alone!

It was the WORST move a coach in his position could make. I hope the athletic director takes steps to suspend Roy for the first 5 games next year.

Kansas should use the picture as a recruiting tool. It would go like this. You can play for Roy Williams and join him in the stands for the championship game or you can come to Kansas and participate in the game.

This is just not a silly little issue. This is a major NO-NO. It would be differnt had Kansas not just recenlty waxed the floor with Roy's Boy's.

This is one time I'll bet Ol' Roy wishes the sticker was slick.

I can't believe UNC fans are so insecure that they go to pieces over what their coach is wearing. And with such a good game going on last night, leave it to the sports reporting establishment to focus on Roy Williams shirt.

Move this his discussion over to Entertainment Tonight or the corner tavern because it's got nothing to do with sports.

Ken Tysiac is a horrible columnist, espousing pure speculation to justify his continued denigration of all things Carolina. Snide comments, unwarranted swipes, and questionable basketball knowledge litter your posts, Ken. Kansas played a heck of a game- does that mean they would have won no matter what? The Heels were flat and couldn't buy a shot. Sometimes things like that happen. You should be ashamed of yourself for drawing out the disappointment Carolina's players, coaches, and fans feel with pure SPECULATION.

Get a job on cable news, hack.

Roy should be fired immediately for his open display of loyalty to Kansas.

I am a huge UNC fan and I agree, sitting at that game wearing a Kansas shirt could be the dumbest thing he could have done. But what would everyone be saying if UNC hadn't played Kansas, if they had played someone else,lost... and Roy had showed up at the final game in a Kansas shirt to support his former team. Then a lot of UNC fans would say he was a great, classy, all american great coach to show his support. Get over it, it's a shirt. We played like crap, the better team one.

After your team was just beaten down, you can't wear the other team's jersey. That's just not right. He can go to the game, even root for Kansas, but come on. I'm disappointed in Roy.

I just learned some shocking news. . .UNC is not the only school in the US with a basketball team! Get over yourselves UNC fans. Roy coached there for 15 years and, naturally, has an interest in the school and its basketball program. You got waxed (and I mean WAXED) but it doesn't make Roy a bad guy or coach to show support for Kansas. UNC folks like to think of themselves as being the classiest people around. . .unless it is after they get their butts handed to them.

Why would it surprise NC fans that he still cares for KU? As a Jayhawk, we knew he loved UNC when he was at KU and when he left UNC to go home we knew it was for what it was, a homecoming to rescue a program in shambles. Why would NC fans be angry that he roots for a school that gave him his chance? He stays in contact with lots of Jayhawks and always will. Class act and wish him and UNC the best.

I am a lifelong UNC fan and its people who find what he did wrong that give UNC fan's a bad name. I always pulled for Roy when he was at Kansas except when they played UNC. People need to learn that this is not a question about his loyalty to UNC. Why would anyone that pulls for UNC ever have thought a negative thing about Kansas and pulled against them just because they showed up and took UNC to the woodshed. ANYONE who wants to critize Roy in my book is nothing but a fair weather UNC fan and give true fans a bad name!!

"But Kansas simply was the better team and would have beaten North Carolina regardless of whether Williams, Dean Smith or Red Auerbach was coaching the Tar Heels." That's poppycock! The Tarheels weren't prepared and didn't make the needed adjustments. That's due to a poor performance by the coach! Roy could have supported KU and still worn UNC gear. Another poor decision by the coach! But Roy gets the award for having the most unused momentum-stopping timeouts at the end of the game.

I am a State fan, Coach Roy can wear an entire kansas 1950's basketball uniform if he will coach on our sidelines.

UNC bball season ticket holder here - I was pretty shocked to see Roy wearing the sticker or shirt or whatever it was. Him just being there was enough support, but I'm hurt. I don't care who you are or where you worked for 15 years, you just don't do that kind of thing. I hope Dean called after the game.

Roy should have been back in Chapel Hill with his team. 48hrs after getting smashed in the Final Four on national TV your sitting in the stands with KU gear on eating popcorn? Bad message to send to the fan base and recruits. I could be okay with him being at the game and rooting for them given his history with them but wearing KU stickers right after getting crushed by them? I don't know who he is trying to impress or win over but either KU fans still love him or they don't. Pulling a "stunt" (yeah i said stunt)like this won't change any of there opinions of him.

Thats like my kid getting beat up at the bus stop by the neighborhood bully and the next night me and the bully's dad go out drinking beer together. WHERE YOUR SHAME ROY! He owes his team an apology......

Couldn't Roy just had on neutral colors and been fine with that?

He's sitting with Tar Heels! Wonder how they felt when their head coach comes and sits down with a Kansas pin on? 'Eh, coach...didn't Kansas end our season just the other night?!'

When you leave a school for another, you leave all of your old clothes, buttons, etc. to the next coach to do whatever he/she wishes to do with them.

If Roy still has has feelings toward Kansas, he should have just gone and sat on the bench!

To most of the previous comments WOW! Good job Heels way to be a class act like most real UNC fans. Loyal people are just that LOYAL! It does not disappear. It is the reason he came back home and led UNC to a championship as well as the winningest season ever! Good Job guys can't wait to see what you do as head coach of the UNC Tarheels next year!

Would you want your wife hanging out with her old boyfriend? She's just being loyal to an old love.

As a long-time Carolina fan I felt insulted when I saw the Jayhawk sticker on Roy's shirt. It's even more insulting to the men on his team. It's one thing to root for a team you used to have close ties to, but quite another to flaunt it, especially when your loyalties SHOULD lie in another direction.
Bad move, Roy, you lost a lot of respect from me.

Roy talked about how much he loved North Carolina while on the KU sidelines for 15 years. So this should come as no surprise to anyone, really. He's always been open and honest about his feelings about both schools, and I don't doubt his sincere feelings for both.

Roy's a class act who has loved two schools in his lifetime -- the one he grew up with, and the one that give him his big break, which led to 15 great years. That job essentially allowed UNC to groom him into a great coach when the time came for him to go home.

So if the Tar Heels want to be upset about Roy showing love for a program that groomed him into a championship coach for the people in Chapel Hill, so be it, those people won't ever get it.

I guess the world has just gone insane. That's all I can say.
Please tell me that people aren't actually arguing about this today. Memphis and Kansas played a heck of a game. It wasn't about Roy Williams or North Carolina.
Look, Kansas gave Roy his first head coaching job. He sat there pulling for the program he worked for and with for years and did it because he's passionate. That passion is what makes him a great coach.
Surely no real UNC fan believes Roy's true loyalty is not to Carolina. He left Kansas, a place he obviously loves, to come to Chapel Hill. He's done a great job in Chapel Hill, too. His team had a tremendous season this year. His players know he's committed to them but the Tar Heels weren't playing Monday night. Roy was pulling for a program that means a lot to him.
If they played this year's Final Four four times in four successive weeks, it wouldn't surprise me if each of the teams won it once. Kansas played great at the start and finish Saturday night and at the finish Monday night. That was enough.
If North Carolina had lost in the same way Memphis did in the final people would be calling Roy a "choker." Which would be insane, too.
If Duke were in the final would anybody have been shocked to see Tommy Amaker sitting behind the Duke bench? No.
This whole thing just absolutely baffles me.

Anonymous said...

I was shocked. It was like seeing Churchill wearing a swastika.

I don't care who they lost to, this was just dumb. Cheer for Kansas but wear your UNC apparel.

To think that Tarheel fans gave Coach K a hard time for not wearing a ribbon at the Duke-UNC game, and then your coach, YOUR LEADER, shows up in a Kansas shirt?

Why Roy? Was is because you truly couldn't handle a few boobirds?

Anonymous said...

I read all of the other comments before I posted, and there are a couple of points to be made here.

Anyone close to the UNC program knows where Roy's loyalty lies. He is, and always will be, a TarHeel. However, we need to remember that it was Kansas that gave him his first head coaching job and allowed him to become the Roy that we all know and love as our head coach.

Secondly - Roy Williams wanted to be playing last night more than anything else in the world. Anyone that thinks otherwise is crazy. But why would he not cheer for, as he puts it, "his second-favorite" basketball team, aspecially after they dismantled his team a couple of nights before?

Having played college basketball, I can relate to that feeling of disgust towards an opponent that defeats your team so thoroughly. However, afterwards there was a feeling of respect and deep down, you wanted that team to go on and win it all so you at least had lost to the champion.

I think that Roy's Jayhawk sticker was a display of respect to this Kansas team, as well as a tribute to the school that gave him so much. It probably was not the most PR-friendly move, but Roy has always said that while he loved coaching the Jayhawks, he'd always be a TarHeel.

We need to remember that.

you carolina fans are so much in denial that it's pathetic. i am not a carolina fan or a 'abc' ranter but what your coach done was purely selfish and self serving on his part.
i played college ball [d 2] and even at our level NO ONE on our team would have ANY RESPECT for our coach if he showed up at a game with the team's logo that beat us the previous week.IT WOULD BE A SLAP IN MY FACE if i gave the coach and my team EVERYTHING I HAD and lost and then he shows up with their logo . i would lose ALL RESPECT for him personally.
i can only imagine how much this is amplified on a major level
it's going to be very interesting how his players are going to respond to him in the heat of battle next year.[it wouldn't surprise me if a couple of them zone him out ]
all this showed me is that roy is in it for roy.if he cared how his players felt he would have worn a logo HONORING THEIR EFFORT! but instead he wants everyone to know that HE has fond memories of kansas and to heck with his current players;boosters;fans;etc

Why didn't Roy ride the plane back to RDU with his team on Sunday after that pitiful loss? He could have cheered loudly for KU and worn all his KU gear at home. Why did he send his team back home alone? I am a lifelong Tar Heel fan and UNC alum. I understand he loves KU. I was pulling for KU too. I understand the linked history between these two great programs. But Roy should have stayed with his team. All for one, one for all. Live together and fall together. Does any of this matter in the long run? No, but since the blogger brought it up that's what I think. I was more offended by his presence there WITHOUT his team than the sticker on his shirt. And is there any significance to it being just a sticker? Was it just a last-minute idea to slap it on his shirt on the way to his seat? Why not wear something more permanent like a KU hat or a KU printed T-shirt?

Anonymous said...

I only wish we lifelong Carolina fans who as Roy says "have nothing invested" in the outcome of the games could be as happy as Roy was on Monday night. I will be mad til next season. Tyler is probably mad too. But Roy, he was all smiles on Monday night. Well, good for him.

Anonymous said...

I'm one of the biggest Carolina fans out there, and I don't have a problem with Roy wearing the Kansas sticker. I would only expect Roy to still care for Kansas. I don't think that lessens his love for Carolina at all.

Anonymous said...

I cannot believe all the hullaballoo about Roy's sticker. We all know that he loves Kansas and has great pride about his career there. Why is it so hard to imagine that he still cares about the Kansas tradition and program. Yes, he felt guilty about leaving after swearing he would stay until he died. But that is so totally human and the program there had changed in ways that played into that decision. Give the guy a break. He coached the Tarheels to their very best season ever with a big let-down in the biggest game of the season. Sometimes that is just way life happens. I am sure it will be major motivation for the team next year. Hansbrough, Lawson and Ellington will probably all stay one more year. Keep your eyes on the prize and let go of the past. It is so silly to be so petty. Look at the bigger picture.

Anonymous said...

PITIFUL...just PITIFUL.

To those that asked why Roy didn't ride back on the plane.....he had to stay and support Tyler Hansbrough in his winning of another player of the year awards on Sunday night.

Geez, people always find something to complain about.

First and foremost, I am a life long Carolina fan and always will be. That being written, I had absolutely NO problem with Coach Williams wearing the Jayhawk sticker or supporting Kansas at the National Championship game. The majority of posters here and the people on talk radio have tried to make some relation to him doing this and him not being loyal to Carolina. That's insane. What it was, was the most CLASS act I think I have ever witnessed in any sport. I am even more proud, if that is even possible, to be a Tar Heel's fan now. Granted a lot of the posts here makes me wonder how many classy fans my team has, but we'll save that for another post.

I felt with Coach Williams doing exactly what he did showed that Carolina is by far the classiest program out there. No we have never seen another head coach do anything like this. Nor will we ever see it again. But everyone should keep in mind this is COLLEGE athletics. It's not the Pros. Coach Williams has very personal relations with all of his players. Not just the one's who he has coached at Carolina. That's why he was out there sitting with 9 of his former Jayhawk players. There are a part of his family.

And no this is nothing like seeing Churchill wearing a swastika. That has to be the most stupid correlation I have ever read. We aren't talking about War, death, destruction, hate, racism, or anything of the sort. We are talking about college athletics that involve 18- 22 year old kids. Try to keep things in perspective.

KU was always my second favorite team until a lot of the KU fans started bashing Coach Williams and Coach Smith. But after seeing Coach Williams at the game, KU is now again my 2nd fav team. If he can forgive them for all the insults they flew at him, so can I. But I do now wonder if a lot of Carolina fans are any better. All of the negative posts on here show clearly those posters have zero class. Grow up people. This is just a game.

Go Heels!!! And congrats to the Jayhawks! We'll get you next year though!!!! ;-)

On Friday, before the game in San Antonio, my wife and I went to watch the team practices. UNC's practice was lame. The players came out looking like they had overslept or were hungover. My thinking was that Roy was encouraging them to relax and be stress free but they did appear to look extraordinarily unenthusiastic.

On Saturday, I couldn't believe that Kansas led at one point 40-12. Roy Williams let the team self destruct and NEVER called a time out in an effort to stop the steam roll. If one didn't know any better, you would have thought Williams was throwing the game as a favor to Kansas.

On Monday night, seeing Williams with the KU shirt logo was unbelievable. It's incredible to believe that this is the coach of UNC, of all places. It's incredible to believe that Roy didn't think twice about this stunt.

At Kansas, Roy Williams seemed to characteristically produce a team, year after year, that was ranked in the top five. In the NCAA tourney, Kansas produced nothing under Roy Williams except a few empty trips to the Final Four. UNC won the championship in his first season as head coach.

Just like his Kansas days, Roy seems adept at nurturing a team into the the top ranks but then losing focus and interest in the tournament. It's not fair to the players or fans for your interest to fizzle at the end of the tournament.

Moreover, if your being paid well over a million dollars a year, you don't spit on the school that was gracious enough to hire you with a stunt like this. Be lucky that I'm not the head of the board of regents because I would fire you. Not to worry, if a man can be this stupid, I am sure there is more to come. Roy may have brought his own pet jinx to UNC. Only time will tell.

Anonymous said...

Maybe Roy can go coach the Washington Generals and wear a Harlem Globetrotters sticker to every game!
Roy has yet to win a national championship with HIS players...Heck, he won the championship a few years ago with Matt's players...Matt's!!!
Roy needs to start wearing more "Tar Heel Blue" and less of these gray and khaki he seems to favor. Oliver Purnell wears one of those Clemson orange blazers at games...Roy AT LEAST could wear a light blue tie every now and then...I have about five I can loan him if he can't find any!

Anonymous said...

I may be off here, but it's possible that basketball is JUST A GAME. Roy Williams, however, is a human being. And I'm not quite sure what to say to those who get a kick out of bashing people, especially authentic ones like Roy. But for starters I might say, "are you really such a cold-hearted fool?" And I might follow that up with, "is your life so empty that the sticker a guy wears on his shirt at a basketball game makes you go BIZERK?" I mean, come on people! Have a little perspective here. Roy was simply trying to bury the hatchet with the KU folks who felt betrayed when he bolted for Carolina (also an extreme reaction). It had nothing to do with the game two days prior. His team (Carolina, for the record) was out of the tournament and he wanted to root for his second favorite team (KU, whom he spent 15 YEARS of his life coaching). That's it, end of story. So don't get your panties in a bunch. Roy will still be UNC's coach next year and he will still bleed Carolina blue (with maybe a hint of Crimson). The EXTREMISM that sports draws out of people will never cease to amaze me. I love athletics for competition sake just as much as the next guy but much peace is to be had when you realize IT'S JUST A GAME.

Hey more power to Roy. Not everyone in this state pulls for UNC.This is a free country Roy can wear anything he likes. Who cares if he insulted any Carolina fan, that was his business and no one elses. Go Roy !

"Moreover, if your being paid well over a million dollars a year, you don't spit on the school that was gracious enough to hire you with a stunt like this."

Five years ago, Roy wasn't lacking a good job. UNC wasn't being "gracious" when they went after him during the 2003 Final Four week and hired him. Roy did UNC a huge favor by becoming their coach.

Anonymous said...

With a commitment to coach at Carolina, Roy should always show respect for the school, fans and mostly for his players. Wearing so proudly the Jayhawk logo did none of the above. His players were at their lowest and instead of supporting them, Mr. Williams were representing Kansas's biggest fan. Yes, Kansas played great and beat Carolina fairly, with great skill and without question. But Carolina had a great year and showed a class act. Too bad THEIR coach couldn't do the same.

It took alot of nerve for Roy to wear that Kansas logo on Monday night. After witnessing the worst prepared and coached Final Four Tarheel team in school history,(What were you saving timeouts for, to go over and congratulate the Jayhawks?) then those faithful, true blue fans and this great team got slapped in the face by Ol Roy. They deserved better! I guess now Roy will be off to the Masters to watch Tiger, no doubt with some old buddies from the Midwest.

I'm a die-hard Kansas fan and came over to this story because I heard Roy was catching a bunch of grief. Imagine if you can if Roy entertains an offer from a school you know he truly loves and then turns it down to say he is staying forever. Then 3 years later he does the same thing a skips town without even a word. This is what he did to KU and the majority of folks dis-liked him for that. Every KU fan (and every UNC fan) should know that Roy's heart is with UNC but he had 15 real good years of his life at KU. As a KU fan I can say that I was very surprised to see him do that and it healed a lot of relationships, which was clearly bothering him. Now that its done, everyone can move on. UNC fans should stand back out of the heat of the moment and realize what they have. It only took me (and most KU fans) 5 yrs to do it.

I was at the Final Four at the Alamodome in 1998 and this past weekend. I watched Utah get a 20 point lead on us before we called a timeout and it was like Goundhog day Sat. to wait til it was 38-12 before we called a time out against Kansas. I am a Rams Club member who was shocked to see Roy wear a Kansas sticker on his shirt. I saw plenty of ROYVENGE and we Hate Roy shirts all weekend. Coach, the Kansas fans do not care for you at all anymore the chants on the Riverwalk were not PC. I would never expect Joe Torre to go to the World Series and wear a Red Sox cap or Rich Rodriguez to wear a West Virginia shirt. Do not wear a Kansas sticker when the talk is about Self going to OK State leaving the Kansas job open. Was Roy trying to get an interview? We had a heck of a run this year but Coach, Game over, Kansas over.

Hi, im 14 years old and i love the UNC tarheels. I saw Tom Sorensens article today and i disagree with him. dont you think Coach John Fox of the Carolina Panthers probably pulled for the New York Giants in the super bowl. he was their Defensive Coordinator before becoming the Panthers head coach. this is the same situation. i like the fact that he did this for two reasons. A) he was their old coach and still supports them. B) he shows enough class to go to the game, with a sticker of the team that beat him, on his T-shirt.

What is so ironic is that just weeks ago Roy Williams was mad and complaining because NC State red clad fans were sitting near mid court in the Smith Center. In the post game press conference he was still steamed and said that he had enough #%*@! money to buy the *%&$@ seats and give them to Tarheel fans. Then he proceeded to reprimand the ticket owners for giving their seats in the Smith Center to NC State fans. Is that a double standard or what???

Anonymous said...

I wonder if that would have happened if they had on Jayhawk shirts?

It's not about the logo.

Last year, I watched for over 12 minutes while our team melted down against Georgetown while the most important man on the team, Roy Williams, became a spectator. I was angry at him for weeks.

This year, I watched him become a spectator again for over 12 minutes and when we were down 28 points, he called a time-out, and we finished the half on a surge.

The next night, he became a happy spectator at the Kansas game. I personally would have been uninterested in showing my burning, shameful, angry face in public for several days after a loss like that, so much like the year before, and both my fault.

But then, I hate losing. Does Roy? Or is he just a happy spectator after the recruiting is done, whether he's watching Kansas or UNC?

Roy Williams wearing KU logo was just showing disrespect for his team, school and fans. Williams has commented that he never wanted to coach against Kansas, and he DIDN'T.

What about the blogs on the Raleigh News & Observer site. Nothing but praise for good Ol Roy for supporting his beloved KU. Were these all from his office staff?

Roy is an awesome coach and North Carolina fans should back him in all decisions he makes. I think it was great that he showed his support for KU (hello, he spent many of his years there and nothing is going to change that…not even angry North Carolina fans). He did nothing wrong, his team wasn’t in the final. ENOUGH WITH THE DRAMA! It’s not like he wore it during the North Carolina vs. KU game. You can’t blame Roy for North Carolina’s loss anymore than you can give Self the credit for Mario hitting the three. They players know what they have to do to win the game. The talent of the players is what wins games. KU was the better team and they proved that by winning the national championship.

I cannot believe the uproar. How is Roy's wearing of the Kansas logo insulting to Carolina? I guess being a high profile coach means you cannot be human and show human feelings and emotions. The critical blogs regarding this incident border on the ridiculous. I would think we all have something better to do than to worry about this.

Okay I have a read a lot of this crap. I only want to comment to those who are UNC fans and have "lost respect" for Roy. Where are you gonna be when we win it all next year. You gonna not root for Carolina because their coach is a class act. I saw one person refer to him as a wife hanging out with his ex and another say it was like a churchill wearing a swastika. First of all Churchill was never a Nazi as Roy was a Jayhawk. And I am sorry if your wife cheated on you guy, but I am pretty sure this does not mean ol' Roy is trying to get his job back at KU. They were better that night but overall I really believe UNC was a better team. They played horrible that night but I believe any coach in America that had to chose would take UNC talent over KU, especially if TH comes back next year. Congrats Jayhawks!

Seriously, stop it. You're ruining everything.

At least Roy was wearing pants.

Better chicken sticker than chicken legs.

Coach Roy may thought he is showing "class". To me he showed why the team played so poorly on Saturday. Coach Roy evidently had no intention of winning against Kansas. How can you expect your team to give 100% when the coach only gives 50% or less. His priorities should be with his present team, whether it is UNC, Kansas, Memphis, Clemson, Duke, or whatever! He owes his playes a big explanation and apology. I don't think even good old Matt would have made such a judgement error.

This one is for all the spoiled cry baby Carolina fans all mad and upset with old Roy for wearing a KU sticker. GROW UP! Its ok for a coach to support his old team. He wears his heart on his sleeve and has so much love and dedication to the game of basketball. He doesn't need to be liked by all. His record proves he is a legend and already one of the best college coaches to ever grace this fine game. If you guys are so upset perhaps a lesser coach should be in mind? Remember your 8-20 season? I do and oh boy how bad things were at such a first class program. Look, us Kansas fans were pretty angry when he left after he said in 2000 he was going to stay. In time though even before the KU game I understood why he left. He just wanted to go home and be close to family. He wanted to coach the ONE SCHOOl he loves the most. I was very disappointed yet elated for North Carolina a basketball program so classy and enjoyable that I knew he would win a championship there and he did very quickly. North Carolina has one of the five best coaches in this game today. You can't win them all us Kansas know this all to well prior to a week ago.

Just as the UNC fans were very fond of telling KU fans last week...Get over it.
